5 Steps to a new life, next step number 3......

Yesterday I posted a discussion on a letter my son had received from the RAF in regards to joining, he made me wait until he came home before I could find out what was in it.
My son decided to join the RAF when he realised that he did not want to go to college, he had a lot of crap to deal with at school and I guess it just put him off. So anyway, he applied to join a few weeks ago and basically by my calculations there about 5 steps to get through before he finds out if he is in or not.
Step 1 was an entry test, he passed.
Step 2 was an interview, he passed.
Step 3 is a medical and that is what his next step is, he will have to go through a full medical next week to see if he is healthy enough to join. He should be, after all he is only 16 and has been to the doctors once in the last ten years, so I do not think there is much wrong with him!
I think this has to be the longest period of my life, I want it to hurry up and go so that we know if he gets in or not, but at the same time I know that if he does get in then he will start a new life, without me, his Mum and I am not sure I am ready for that! I know, I have no choice I just have to get on with it, but still it is hard to think about, as I know that he is very much like me and once he gets a taste of living away from home, he will not want to come back.
Have any of your children joined the forces or army, what was it like for you?
What stage of school life are your kids at, do they know what they want to do or be when they leave school and what age do your kids leave school at?

What are Step 4 and 5?
I have no children but my whole family life has been based around the forces. I mean my dad, my grandad (mum's dad), all 3 of my mum's brothers were in the forces also some of my cousins to.
My older brother did join the army but he was older than your son. He did quite well in their until he injured himself and had to leave. Obviously I don't have the same anxiety (if that's what you would cal it) but maybe it will do some good. he will become independent and learn basic skills. you never know he could stay local to were you live.

Step four will be a fitness test and then step 5 I think is where he finds out if he is in and then he signs a contract for 9 years! it will do him good of that I have no doubt.

He is going to be a driver, so he will learn all different licenses and he will be in charge of looking after and driving the different vehicles. Although he will sign a contract for 9 years he should get a 6 month cooling off period I think so if he decides it is not for him he can leave. And no, he has no back up plan I dont think failing is an issue to him, he wants in and that is what he is focussing on.

Sounds like he has got his life planned. What is he wanting to do in the forces??Has he got a backup plan just in case he isnt accepted?? Is hard trying to plan your life but for the next 9 years!! Wow...he will have to be dedicated!!!
I wish him all the best xx

well grats to him on passing stage2.. and luck on stage 3,4 &5. i think youve still got some time before theyd be shipping him off to boot tho, since he is only 16 and ya have to be 18 to legally go. so breath a little easier.. youve still got 2 more years before hed be leaving to the great wide world.
here.. same as pretty much anwhere i guess.. the age of when you finish school depends on when you finish the requirements necessary to graduate. students start off at age 5 in kindergarten and then have 12 grades to complete before finishing off their high school diploma.. then its off to college or trade school. some exceptions obviously, with the skipping of grades if the kid is really smart and motivated, or being held back a grade if they slack and dont meet requirements with acceptable grades in order to be promoted to the next.. but averagely.. age 17-18 for graduation. my oldest, flunked out so many times she was asked to leave school because she was too old to attend public high school anymore, and was forced to get her GED if she wanted to attain a semblance of a diploma. my sprite.. is still just a wee one at age 8 in the third grade, but is highly motivated and determined. (got a 105% on her first spelling test for the year and a 100% on her first math test YEY!!!
) always does her homework, extra credit work, gives herself work when the teacher doesnt so she learns more, and is saving her pennies and nickles like a miser towards future college tuitions. she wants to be a vetrinarian (at the moment, anyways.. shes 8.. so next week she might wanna be a super hero) and has held fast with that conviction since she was 4. more specifically.. she wants to work at a place called Tiger Island.. its an animal rescue where they find injured/sick/orphaned tigers and nurse them to full health before releasing them back into the wild. she hunts down books at the library dealing with animal care, breeding and medicine.. and has begun asking me how she can finish with school quicker so she can do what it is she really wants to do. shes also whining about not being old enough to ge a job yet to make more money to put into her savings LOL gods i love this girl

If all goes to plan, he will be in before christmas or just after. He will do 9 weeks of training, then he will get time off and then he goes and joins his department or whatever it is called and he will live on the base.
Your little girl sounds really clever! She is the same age as my second boy he is 8, he is not good with school he really hates it, which is a shame as he is rather clever. He wants to be in the armed response of the police so I keep telling him he has to work hard at school, I offer prizes for certain things and it seems to be doing the trick. Never had 100% though!
I was told that if a child decides what they want to be at a young age and sticks with it then chances are they will not change their minds so maybe that is what she will be and my son will do what he wants. My third son wants to be a gingerbread man, I am hoping this will change although we have had this since he was 4!!

Ahhh I never thought of it like that, now that puts a whole new perspective on him wanting to be a gingerbread man!

Hi gemini,
Wow..I know it is tough as a Mother but it is something you need to prepare, life is like this..Parents take care of the kids and raise them to be a better person and to have a great future and soon, they will leave you!
I remember my Mom when I left the Country, I know they hate it but they just supported me..It was hard for me also since we were like best friends..We are only 4 in the family and we really have a great moment!
Anyway, just be ready and all you need to do is support him, you know, at least you still have 3 wonderful kids with you!

I want him to go, I want him to get out of the area we live in, as there are no opportunities here for him, but we went through such a lot together from his birth til he was 8 and I met my now hubby, and I guess it is just going to be hard. Well he is only on step 3 so a way to get yet anyway.

Hello dear gemini_rose. So your son is choosing to join RAF? Anyway I am very happy to know that he has already passed the first two steps and will pass the third step for sure for his being healthy as a young man. I wish every step of his a smooth one with lots of successes.
Well, in China, one needs or needed to be eighteen to join the army. I am not so sure whether there is some change about the age nowadays. But I guess that it is still eighteen years old before one can join the army.
Well, I also have a son of the same age as yours, who is now at senior high school, in his second year from this autumn school term. So that's to say he has to wait for another two years before he could either join the army when he reaches eighteen. But he prefers to go to college and I do hope that he will be able to be enrolled to study at a good college or university for four years' study.
Thank you for your discussion and have a good day, friend.

The job that my son has chosen to do within the RAF has a minimum age of 17, he will be 17 in about two weeks but they take them in from 16 anyway. I hope that it all goes well for him, I think that he will enjoy it once he gets past the 9 weeks training he has to do.

None of mine have joined the armed forces, they went in another direction. But im sure it will be a worthwhile job, there are many skills taught in the forces.A while ago my cousins son joined the army,he was really wayward and they had many worries with him,he was the typical nightmare child .But he has got on really well,he has recently had his passing out parade, and they were so proud of him,and quite rightly so.But the very best to your son.

I am glad he did not want to join the army actually, I know that he may be in danger in whatever he chooses to go in but i am glad he chose the RAF.

Is he advanced for his age or do all the kids graduate highschool at 16?
Here the kids don't get out of school until they're about 18, and then off to college or into the army. I don't think you can join the army until you're at least 18.
Well my oldest is 11 and in 6th grade, so I've got some time yet before he's moving on with his life. Right now he wants to be a professional athlete, he's leaning towards football although he's never played it on an organized team, just with the boys on the street.

No, all kids leave school at 16, actually my son is the eldest in his year, so a lot of the kids that left in May would still have only been 15. Here they can join the forces etc at 16.
