Ceiling fan Vs table fan

We have ceiling fans at our apartment in Arizona. My husband told me that they can be reversed that one way is to make the room cooler in the summertime, and another way is to circulate warm air in the winter, or something like that. I can't remember which direction serves which purpose, but they can be reversed. He even showed me.
