1988 Olds Cutlass Cierra, 4 cyl (Tech 4), Frt wheel drive I will try to give as exact an explanation as I can. These issues seem to happen every time I drive more than approx 20 miles. It happens when I get off the freeway or if I don't drive the freeway, it will happen sooner than 20 miles. When it happens, it happens when I come to a stop ( at a light or a stop sign). The engine just coughs and dies. I put it in neutral and it starts right up but as soon as I put it in gear it dies again. I do this about 6 or 7 times and then I can go to the next stop when it happens again. I do this about 3 or 4 stops and then it's done for awhile. This has me totally confused. I tried something the other day. I put it in low as I came to a stop and it didn't die. But I don't know if it would have if I didn't put it in low. Just another issue to confuse the whole thing. Any ideas?

First of all, I would like to welcome you to myLot. By what you wrote, it sounds to me that you may have a vacuum leak. When you are driving at a slow speed, can you hear a sort of hissing sound? If you can, open the hood and locate the sound. It may be something as simple as a disconnected vacuum hose. If this is it, connect the hose in its proper place and see if that fixes your problem. Hope it works

First thing I would need to know is whether any of your gauges are showing any change when it is trying to die. Next, does the outside temperature seem to have an effect? Has it been doing this for a while or is it a new problem? Does it cough or sputter when you start slowing down? I am not sure if it would help, but the first thing I would try is putting fuel injector cleaner in the next tank of gas. I would also check the air filter to see if it needs changed. It sounds like a fuel problem to me. For any other suggestions, I would need more information about the problem.
