I'm sure you've heard about Vicepresidential candidate for the Republican Party, Sarah Palin, using one of Heart's biggest hits, "Barracuda", as the theme for her campaign based on her highschool nickname "Sarah Barracuda" and have oppinions about it... Now, they (Republican party) that they have the permission from the ASCAP, but Ann and Nancy Wilson condemned the use of the song cause "Sarah palin's ideas do not represent us as american women in any way"... by the other hand, Roger Fisher (co-writer of the song and former heart's lead guitarrist) said that he was going to use the earnings to support Obama's campaign. So, the real question is: do political parties have the right to use artists' songs without their permission??

The song, Barracuda, was originally written because some tabloid started false rumors about the two sisters in the band. In addition to being Sarah's nickname in school, it seemed that the press was picking up all kinds of things about her past to report on.
The problem with taking artists' & songwriters' songs to use on your campaign is that it also gives the mis-interpretation that the band/musicians/sonmgwriters are in support of the particular candidate when they, in reality, don't. A good example of that is Roger Fisher's use of the earnings from that song. So I don't care whether or not I support a candidate who wants to use a certain song. He should be required to also get permission from the songwriters, & the artist to use it.
