Another dog attack upon a child

It has happened again. I was reading the headlines from a local TV news site today when I saw this story about a little boy and his sister who were playing in a creek bed near their home when the boy was attacked by a dog. By the time the mother got to the scene the first dog had been joined in the attack by another dog. When are people going to learn to behave responsibly concerning their pets?http://www.whiotv.com/news/17652689/detail.html

I always cringe when I see or read stories regarding dog attacks on anybody let alone children.
I have seen dog attacks for real and it can be terrifying, especially if there is more than one dog because the pack mentality seems to kick in and they go absolutely crazy. This poor child. I agree with you 100% that people need to be more responsible with their dogs and any dog that viciously attacks a child should be immediately put to sleep as well.

Yes, James, if only these people were more responsible think of the grief and heartache that could be spared! I think they should toughen the laws for pet owners even more than they already are.

worldwise - I wonder what happened to the leash law? Where I live, no dog is allowed out without a leash.
Years ago, before the leash law, a German Shepard snapped at my toddlers face, not a full blown attack, but strong enough to cut her tiny face.
I taught my children not to play with dogs they didn't know, but this dog belonged to a neighbor.
I bought a dog from a pet shelter and we had her for a few months before she tried to attack one of my kid's friends. I got there in time to stop the dog and of course, I took the dog to animal control, and she was "put down."
I read of too many dog attacks as well and I agree with you. A dog without supervision can be a dangerous dog. But, even dogs we know can be unpredictable.

I think the problem arises, anawar, because there are some areas such as rural where people feel they are not bound by the law. I have always had a healthy fear of animals but this was not passed on to my kids. They would bring home dogs from time to time, and I was forced to interact with them which helped me to overcome some of my fear.

worldwise - my son brought home a beautiful and pregnant pit bull someone lost.
Yikes! I started calling all the vets in the area and got lucky with the first call. The guy was so happy that I returned his dog, he gave me money and offered to give me one of the puppies. $600 value.
I told him "no thank you", but never told my son.
I'm not a big fan of dogs. I like cats.

This is yet another sad story. Some animal owners don't make any attempt to control their animals. I think it's that plain and simple. I also think that agressive pets are taught to be agressive by their owners. In this case, the owner should be fined. Money talks!
Our animals were never allowed to run loose. Our dogs were confined to a fenced area in the backyard only when they went outside to do their business. The fence is about 10 feet high. We've always had inside dogs that were cared for, loved and taught to be friendly. It takes alot of time and energy to teach a puppy to behave and not be mean but we've never failed yet.
Hope the dog is not rabid and the little boy will not have to undergo rabie shots.

What you say makes so much sense, carolbee, that its amazing how anyone should think otherwise. Unfortunately, there are too many irresponsible pet owners who are not as conscientious as you are.

its so rude...its also very frustating..i dont encourage leaving dogs alone in the places..because it may effect the people on road side..and creates a lot of problems..every person who adopts their own is only responsible for this things..

I believe that most parents really try to take good care of their children, Ichawqword, they simply don't know what goes on in the mind of a dog.

It was rude, awful. It is good to have pet dogs but never give chance for street dogs
If there is a street dog in ur area just don't allow them to go out alone.

Stray dogs should never be trusted, ravitejareddy. They can create a lot of problems.

People assume that boxers are nice and friendly. But I know too well that boxers are almost as dangerous as pit bulls, because we had one in our neighborhood when I was a little girl and no one would go near it. If your dog is dangerous or prone to bite, it has to have all its shots, and kept in a yard and also kept on a leash when you take it for a walk. I do hope the little boy is all right and that the owner of the dog has to pay a heavy fine. The stray you can do nothing about. It was just copying the other dog because it did not have an owner.

That's unheard of, stephcjh. Perhaps you could become an activist to set in motion a move to rectify that wrong. It cannot be left up to the individual to do the right thing in these cases.

That is awful..And not to be in defense of the dogs or the owners, I think the punishment was way too soft, but the boy, Caleb, said something like "he will only play with his own dog from now on." This goes both ways, parents should also teach their children to not play with a strange dog. How many dog attacks are there that the child starts by deciding to play with the dog? It won't stop the stupid owners who have dogs that attack even when you ignore them, but it might protect the children if they also knew what to do..I have always taught my kids to never go up to a strange dog..And if a dog is with it's owner, they are still never to touch the animal unless the owner says it is ok.

You are right, carmelanirel. Children should be taught the right conduct in dealing with all animals. As much as I hate to say it, Children are given the wrong perception of animals in movies and cartoons because they are usually portrayed as gentle and affectionate. We know that this is not always the case. There are mean animals just as there are mean people.
