I did separate my son's clothes when he was a baby. I don't remember exactly when, but probably by the time he was a year old or so I was starting to mix them together with mine. My husband's work clothes always get washed separately, though.

I guess it would be better so that we could also discount a little penny in the pocket on this matter....

As a mom, I like to keep my child's clothes separate during the laundry. I do feel it's more sanitary to do so. And, her skin is more sensitive so I don't want her clothes to be bleached.

I can relate to your wife. While I don't do it so much now, when my children were new born I would wash their clothes separately from the rest of the families. Occasionally I would put some of my nice clothes with the babies but I would never wash my husbands 'smelly' clothes with the babies! Now that they are no longer babies however I wash everyone's clothes together and separate only by colour.

I am a hopeless case when it comes to washing clothes. It's a house chore which I leave entirely to my wife. But I know that you have to separate the whites from the colour otherwise you 'll end up with a white with the colours of the rainbow such as I did once.

I always use a separate detergent for my kids clothes. So, I don't mix it with the rest. Plus, I add bleach to our clothes, while I don't add bleach for the kids. It is always better to wash kids clothes separately because some detergents can be allergic to kids. One of my friend's kid is allergic to all other detergents, and gets rashes all over her body. So, she has no option but to use the same detergent for all their clothes, and linens. When they grow bigger atleast 6 years from now, I might just start adding theirs to ours. Until then it has to be separate.

I used to wash my kids clothes separate from mine when they were infants, but I stopped after awhile. I used to use a different detergent when washing their clothes that was supposed to be better for baby's because it had no dyes or perfumes in it.
