To post or not to post - that is the question!

Hi there. I just got inspired to start a discussion a couple of minutes ago about myLot user names but, when I used the search option to find out if there are existing discussion threads on the subject, I found around two pages' worth of discussion thread links and decided not to start my own. Which got me wondering - how many of you, dear myLot-ers, actually use the search option to determine if similar discussion threads have already been started on a subject about which you want to post before you post a new discussions? Do you still continue posting your discussions even if there are other similar threads already in circulation? If there are a lot of existing discussions on the topic, I usually choose to no longer start my own thread. After all, I'm one of the persons who would rarely post to a discussion with a similar subject as that of a discussion to which I have already responded previously. So, how about you? Please do share your thoughts.

I use it, but I know that unless you search for the exact term that someone used as a tag that the search won't work - even if you do a full text search. I have often searched for a topic and didn't find one. Only to post that discussion and 3 others about the same thing pop up after the fact.

You're right about the tag issue. Most people don't tag properly or add irrelevant tags. And, I might use different words from you to describe a situation, so then you wouldn't find any relevant discussions.

As someone told me when I first got here on Mylot: Just make the discussion your own. Add a personal or relevant anecdote or story; or add your own advice. And, change up the title, so it's not so obvious.

I do agree with you and I do search for the subjects I want to start thethread on. However, it is not necessary that the threads already started contain all the points I really want to discuss. Hence, in case I find that there is similar thread, then I try to read the thread and if I do not find the points I want to discuss then I will start new discussion. I have not started too many discussions. Perhaps this is the reason for me for not starting too many new threads.

nekonyants I have often used the search option only to not find that my topic had been used, then after making my discussion I find a dozen others similar to mine. It doesnt always work so I seldom even bother. I just check other discussions and 'then work accordingly.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE,IT'S A QUESTION~~My favorite wording~~ In fact,I don't do such search before posting coz I just need to post the discussions I interested and/or for some sudden inspirations~even with some similar posts before,I will still continue my discussions~/Have a nice day~

Hello nekonyanta, I would say don't bother! Not unless you are terribly paranoid and that you are quite sure that question has been asked at least a million times. The reason for that is life is short, don't worry too much lol! But really, most if not all topics have been posted by myLotters in their 10,000 variations already. What is more important than posting a duplicate (which you, I, everybody are most probably doing) is posting your original discussion. As long as you wrote them yourself and the idea really feels original enough to you, go ahead. Just whack. Cheers!

I often use the MyLot search option before starting a discussion but what happens is that when I searched and did not find a similar discussion, I would most likely post it and later on find out that there are other similar discussions on the same subject. It was not intentional on my part. I did use the search button and did not find any but after posting the discussion, a similar one would appear. lol

Hi friend,I havent yet used the search option to view for similar discussions.Whatever comes to my mind I immedietely make a discussion.Sometimes I earn lot of responses and sometimes very few.But sometimes even similar discussion posted earns lot of responses.Once I posted a discussion and earned only one response, but the same discussion posted by someonelse after a week earned lot of responses. The way we post and the words we use and the time we post is only important. So what I feel is there is no need to use search option to see whether similar discussions got posted early.thanks for sharing.happy mylotting.

Hi there! I haven't used the mylot search option ever. I don't even know there's a mylot search. lol. No, I wouldn't continue posting my discussion if there are other similar threads in circulation. I'll just respond to it. Happy posting!!

Nope, I don't search at all. First because there's so little chance that the discussion I started was phrased in the exact same way that I did. And besides, it's not like people that are commenting now have commented on the same discussion previously since we only comment on most recent discussions (older discussions are so way down the pile that they are no responded to). Thanks for the comment on my discussion!

Its better not to start such a discussion which is already there. We should do something creative, copying is not a good idea.

As what you have said about to post or not for me I will post. I dont care if there are lot of the same discussions for as long as i have express my thoughts and ideas which is helpful to readers it"s okay. Everyone have different kinds of ideas and experience to share which I know that everybody become excited! For me posting of good thoughts and ideas especially if we put our feelings on what we gonna do is expressing ourself. It really helps to those who would like to relieved thier feelings through posting or what so ever. So, let us express ourselves and feel free and have some fun! At the same time let us gather lot of FRIENDS!
