We put up our Halloween decorations. My daughter was looking forward to it since October 1st. We have our giant inflatable pumpkin. 3 scarecrows, a couple of skulls. 10 items in all. Do you decorate for Halloween, or let it pass?

Good morning, ersmommy1, I used to decorate for Halloween because it was one of my wife's favorite holidays. I, myself, had never been so deeply "into" Halloween. But she enjoyed it so we started collecting a few Halloween decorations for the house. Then, of course, I became a daddy and that rather changed everything. Halloween was restored to the rank and file of top tier holidays again. It is, first and foremost, a child's holiday of dress-up and pretend. Now, my daughter's energy and enthusiasm for the day has caused us to be more active. I have even started to dress up a tiny bit. I have a jester's staff and a jester's hat to goof around with as I take my daughter out for trick or treat. We, that is my daughter and I, decorate the house with our humble abilities. I have yet to find a crystal skull which holds a tea-light candle and a pair of scarecrows on teeter totter. Most of our existing Halloween decorations are up. When we go to the store this season, I am sure to pick up one or two new neat little things for the house. I'm not sure, at the moment, what those might be. More of a spur of the moment, "Gosh, that looks neat" kind of purchases. I do, however, recognize a dichotomy of Halloween. There is the fancy fantasy kids dressing up aspect, but there is another holiday which seems to run at the same time. This is the holiday of the ghoulish and macabre.. the scary and bloody holiday Halloween tradition. My daughter has started taking note of that aspect, but she doesn't seem frightened by it. I'm glad. I do not think I will so much enjoy the ghoulish aspects of the holiday as my daughter grows older. It is my understanding that the slightly older children tend to veer towards the darker aspects of the holiday, so it may be one Halloween that my daughter veers away from the fun dress-up aspect into the more sinister and less light-hearted aspect. I'm not entirely sure how I will respond to that. I'm guessing, it will just be a reminder that she is growing up after all.

I think when it gets darker, my daughter will veer away from the holiday altogether. I think it will lose the fun for her.

Well, then, hopefully you can always keep the joy of the simple dress-up fun of Halloween in your house. I think one of the problems with my enjoyment of the Holiday came from my parent's approach. Essentially, it was expected that sooner or later I would grow out of any desire to dress up and go collecting candy. So, I would suppose, eventually I did. Perhaps your house can run differently.

The only decorating we have done is pumpkins. I bought these plastic things at Walmart that are basically Mr. Potato Head body parts for pumpkins. They did those a few days ago and my son stuck them out on the lawn. We might do a little bit more this week too.

Hi, yes we have started decorating. We have a string of purple lights up on the deck and a big spiderweb made out of lights as well. The spiderweb is neat, the lights making up the web are purple then the spider has orange and white lights on its body. I also want to get some hay bales, a scare crow and some jack-o-lanterns put out. We are strapped for cash right now so it will probably be next week before we do that.
