Getting Trafffic to your website?

I know getting traffic for the website is the greatest challenge we have to surpass when doing business online. I happened to read a blog about getting traffic and it advised me to Post Free ads in the classified ads.. do you think it still works? What is you experience in getting traffic in your website?

Having a lot of content on whatever topic the site is about helps your chances of more traffic through search engines.
