Should foriegners study kanji the way japanese do or what matters is that learners can remember, identify, and understand the meaning. There are two ways of saying each kanji, the on-yomi and the kun-yomi and is it important to pay attention to this detail or just concentrate on the character itself with the meaning? Please give your suggessions here.

It really depends on how deep you wish to go into the language. I have a deep interest in the Japanese language and will be taking up lessons from next Saturday onwards. As a beginner, I think it's better to just know the meaning and get comfortable with the language. As time goes by, if interests develop, one can spend more time paying attention to the details.

Thanks for the response. I'll do your suggestion(characters and their meanings irst). If that's the case, I already have a hundred(1000 more, wish me luck). As for the yomis, I'll do that as time allows.

I have a very weird way of learning kanji. I learn what I need, when I need it. I live in Japan and have been for 17 years, 18 in January but have never studied the language in any formal way. At the moment I'm having to learn how to read food labels as my husband has kidney problems and I have to figure out what he can and can't eat!! My kids all attend Japanese schools, they bring home their homework and honestly it is a lot to remember, both reading, when the kanjis are put together is another reading and of writing in the correct order. Good luck with your study. Jacks
