A few months ago my freezer went but a friend gave me another which was working fine but I went to make tea tonight and I had lost the lot, incuding the joint of beef I won towards Christmas and the turkey joint too [em]sad[/em I have house contents but the excess is £100 and I guess I had around £150 worth of food in there, I received a cheque for doing a survey of £70 earlier in the week so I guess that came easy and will now be spent towards buying a new freezer. I did ring the insurance company and they said to take photos of all the food before disposing of which I have done and the girl estimated £250 on food which I suppose would give £150 back. Do you get penalised for claiming. How does it all work? Would you bother claiming or just let it go?

Hi Shelly, I uploaded a pic of some of the food lost in Munchkins response, I am a littlr upset by it but am still unsure whether to claim or not. That is why we have insurance but at the same time £100 excess is it really worth it? Huggles. Ellie :D

Oh Ellie, you poor thing, just when you have a spot of luck something bad happens!! What a nightmare! i think it would probably be worth it if the food is worth £250 quid and you excess is £100, although i've never (touch wood) claimed anything on my home insurance so i'm not exactly sure how it all works, i hope you get a new one sorted soon though, i don't think we realise how much we rely on freezers and stuff until we have to do without! xxx

Hi Munchkin, Listing the food I don't think I did have that much in there but that is what the insurance woman suggested. The £70 from the survey covers the bulk but I could have used that for a want rather than a need, but that will go towards a new freezer now! They told me to take pictures of food lost so I will upload one of the seven to give you an idea. I will sleep on it as I am hungry and a bit errrrrrrrgh right now as you can imagine. Huggles. that's much more than there ever is in my freezer!! I'm not surprised you're not in the best of moods! it's a shame you can't treat yourself with your survey money but hopefully you might get a bit of spare cash again soon. have a think about it, i suppose you've just got to weigh up whether it's worth the 100 pound excess! hope tomorrow is a better day for you Ellie! xxx

Hi Munchkin, It is not like me to be grrr about anything so all will be fine again tomorrow, I'm off on a trek down to Cornwall for the day to visit a friend so todays woes and freezer probs will be behind me by then. That was pick one and 1/3rd of the contents but just to give you some idea. Huggles. Ellie :D

I dont quite understand how claiming for insurance works, its not exactly the sort of thing you can understand unless you go through it. Ive never claimed for anything and would have thought they would penalise you for claiming unless you are claiming frequently!!

Hi Cinderella, Well I have just put the phone down from the insurance company and they have said that they will send me £150 worth of vouchers for Sainsburys for me to spend out in the post today, but new freezer doesn't arrive until next Thursday so will wait til then to restock, it would have been £250 but they deducted £100 for excess but at least I will have enough to get a fair amount and rebuy Christmas dinner eh! They said that it won't affect my insurance by that much next year but it will go up slightly, if I had, had an extra cover they would have paid for the freezer to be replaced aswell but I didn't know that when I took out, so much small print. So it won't be egg and chips afterall LOL. Huggles. Ellie :D

I hate things that have small prints, they should make that section larger and get some one to explain it all to you as they always word it so that it confuses everyone!!
I'm glad you have managed to get it all sorted!! There is nothing wrong with egg and chips!! I love egg and chips, only if the eggs are runny of course!!

i didn't even know you could claim for that. but i guess it depends on the company on wether or not your premium goes up, if it does go up i would say that it really isn't worth claiming it, you would end up spending more in the long run on the rise in the premium than you would if you didn't make the claim

Hi Rbailey, I have only ever had to claim once before in the past and that was when I was flash flooded and they paid out and it didn't affect the following year but I will find out first if it is viable and what will happen next year. I am upset over the amount of food hat has been wasted more than anything as I hate waste of any kind but I guess these things happen eh! Most policies these days cover freezer contents but not the freezer unless stolen. Ellie :D

The only fridge stuff that tends to go off is lettuce and I have rabbits so even that doesn't usually get wasted, but I have had the odd sausage roll of pack of ham at the back that has gone out of date before we get round to eating which again is frustrating. Ellie :D

lol thats cool, well now i know that it is covered, in most cases, lol see learn something new every day
yeah it is always a shame to see food wasted, lol i hate that as well, i always have a tendency to forget that stuff is in the fridge that will go bad if i don't eat it up relatively soon, and then i end up finding it and have to throw it out, always berate myself for it, but my memory is horrible

Hi there ellie333
I guess you have to weigh up the odds haven't you to see if it is worth claiming or no. The thing is that how long have you been paying your house contents insurance and how likely are you to claim in the future and is it worth the hastle of doing all that paperwork and running around? Never mind about that anywa, how on earth did you earn £70 for doing a survey? That's what I wanna know, never mind about your freezer!! Hahaha
. Good luck with it all anyway and I do hope it all turns out well for you!

Hi Humbug, The survey actually paid me £190 in total over a period of a few months, first month £30, 2nd £40, third £50 and this month the final month £70 and if I have contributed the most to it I will also recieve a bonus of £50 too. I can't send PMs so if you can if you give me your email I will give you more details. I also belong to a site that pays £25 per survey and has also given me and up to four friends free flights to Dublin as a secret flyer. These pay for the mishaps of freezer packing up eh! My mate calls it my 11th hour bail out LOL. Huggles. Ellie :D

How come you can't send PM's? The only way I can think of to give you my email address is if you ask p1kef1sh for it or I tell you what I will ask p1kef1sh to send it to you then he know's I have given you permission to have it if you know what I mean! Is that the easiest way to do it do you think?

aww crap thats rubbish that is babes all that lovely food wasted! It all depends on your policy it will tell you all that in the guidelines and smallprint. I know of a friend who was allowed to pay and excess and she could claim up to £500 but it ended up not being worth it because it would put her payments up and she had opnly lost about £200.00 and could claim £150.00 anyways. Have you got cover on your home contents and your freezer cos my sister could claim on just her freezer cover and it was much cheaper than her contents cover.
If you want i can have a look for cheap freezers for you i'm currently looking for a cheap efficient printer for my nephew so i'm already searching i don't mind! Just email me the spec and size you need plus colour (some people have matching) and i'll keep my eye out you can usually get good deals if you look hard enough but i know your a busy bee.

Hi Mands, like with your friend there is an excess of £100 but you can claim up to £500 for freezer contents, my freezer although a chest freezer probably wouldn't hold £500 worth but totting it all up in my head there was at least £150 plus worth of food in there as the joints alone towards Christmas are a fair amount to replace. It is the waste of food that is so annoying, I can't stand waste. Don't worry about looking out for one for me though as I have already ordered a replacement and a fridge to match as thats on its way out too so I guess thats my pressie to the house for Christmas eh!. Thanks for offering though, I appreciate that. I have taken pics and listed all items and will speak to the company to see if it is viable to claim or not. The only other time I have ever had to claim anything was when I was flash flooded a few years back and that didn't affect the following year. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi Mands, I just ordered two basic under counter fridge and freezer in white, the freezer I have lost is a chest one but I have a space for an under counter one so ha is what I have ordered. They are being delivered on 30th October. The only things I could save were a couple of pizzas that I have put in the fridge as I only put them in the day before yesterday and they were chilled ones so will be fine but the rest was all gone and couldn't risk it. Huggles. Ellie :D
My son just typed you a not bless and then pressed the backspace and deleted it read something like this jacbhrreeeeumnxxxxxxxx LOL. He asked to type, he had earache earlier bless so I gave him some Calpol and he slept on way back from Cornwall so wide awake now bless. Huggles. Ellie :D

blimey you don't mess about do you chick! what have you got what style colour? might be worth claiming then if it's nearer 250/300 and just paying the excess plus if your premium doesn't increase no worries then is there. Just don't forget to put them at prices they would cost you to replace now and not what you paid for them as my sister did that not even thinking. I was like duh but now it's like this much more expensive lol. Shame you didn't manage to save some of it jec let me use her fridge last time mine went dodgy so i only lost a bit. Like you i hate it aswell we ended up giving the dog the meet because we had two lots and it needed using he was well happy lol

I wouldn't bother making a claim on my insurance for something like a freezer going kaput, unless it was due to a basement flood. But then that would mean there were other damages.
My deductible is $500, and I don't think a freezer quitting would be something I could claim on its own anyways.
I would be so upset if I lost my chest freezer and its contents. I pride myself in my ability to buy things in advance when they're on sale, and then store them in the freezer. It saves me so much money in the long run.

I know the pain of losing what's in the freezer though. I think it was 4 years ago now, when my sons unplugged the basement freezer (the extension cord was behind a bookshelf in the playroom), because they wanted to plug in a globe. I didn't notice it until AFTER we'd returned from a week away at my mother's cottage. I was lucky that there was less than $100 worth of stuff in there at the time, but it made me mad.

Hi CanadaGal, Wow $500 is a large excess £100 is more viable. I think I am more upset at the waste of food as like you have been stocking up on the offers and already had my Christmas meat. Serves me right I guess as I jokingly told the girls it would be egg and chips this year LOL, it won't come to that but I wish it had packed up when it was less full. Huggles, Ellie :D

Hi Littleowl, They are not willing to replace the freezer but will give me up to £500 on the food but even though freezer was full I didn't have that much in there but I guess over £150 worth of food which is a lot to lose eh! I cannot stand waste of any sort and that is what is so upsetting. I will speak to them again when the underwriters ring and see if it is viable to claim, have taken pics of the food and listed it all too just in case I need to. Huggles. Ellie :D

Our chest freezer went a couple of years ago and we were able to claim all the food at today's prices based on what we wrote down. They even paid us for bags of trout that I had caught at something like 50p a fish. There was an excess but I honestly cannot remember what it was. Probably £100 too. We claimed off our household contents insurance. They asked for a list and that was it. They sent a cheque in about a week. I suspect that we did have a slightly increased premium the following year but we move our household contents insurance quite frequently anyway so any penalty would have been offset by a discount for being a new customer elsewhere. But what a blow. I hope that you manage to sort something out.

Hi P1kef1sh, I have uploaded a pic of one of seven in Munchkins response above so a lot of food lost. I have taken the pics and made a list of all the contents. I suppose I should have taken a pick of the homegrown too that was frozen if you got 50p for he fish you caught. Tomorrow another day but I could have done without this one, I have visitors over half term and you don't realise how reliant you are on your freezer until you haven't pne eh! Huggles. Ellie :D xx

We didn't replace our freezer afterwards as we found loads of stuff that was positively ancient! We've not missed it too much although we do have a small cabinet freezer, which is heaving! LOL.
It's a bigger pain though when you have visitors. Sounds like fish and chips all weekend! I hope that the visit goes well though.

There may be a chance that your premium will go up a little next year,so I guess that it is up to you to decide whether the food that has been lost by the freezer breakdown is worth the rise in insurance premium next time around. It makes you wonder why we bother to insure things ,this is a world of insuring against every possible thing. My nephew has a critical illness insurance on his mortgage, there has been a lot of contraversy about these kind of policies, and how the insurers will find every which way that they can not to pay out on them. Also the importance of reading the small print at the bottom of the policy, there are so many different illnesses that you are unable to claim for. When you think of the money that is handed over each year to the insurers in the world ,pet insurance, car insurance, home and contents insurance, personal loan protector plans, the list is endless, then at the end of the day it may well be a cheaper way out for you to replace the contents of your freezer yourself, crazy ..

hi Ella 1 bella, I have pet insurance and all the others also but I made sure I got a lifetime cover one with unlimited claims each year in case something happens as I had a dog previously who was epileptic so he had tablets for life so worth it. I know how important reading the small print is as I had an insurance on repayments for a kitchen for a house that was repossessed in the early 90's and I had to give up work overnight for very personal reasons but I was covered but I took the insurance company to court and I won as the jusge said I had paid for the kitchen three times over already and they should have honoured the agreement so I ended up with £1619 back in costs etc. Yippee. When you renew your insurance, youget a no claim bonus which lowers you rpremium. Once you have taken a claim youdo not get the no claim bonus and have to pay the full premium. if the claim is sizable, thenit is worth it but if it is a minor claim, then you might as well forego it.

If I lost a good bit I would if my insurance paid on it. I don't really know if they do for that. I never really thought about it. I guess they do. I would get it if my rates didn't go up because of the claim. It would hardly make it worth it if the rates go up because of it.

That is the right thing to do and wish they will pay what you have lost since you are paying for the insurance but I haven't tried that way, hopefully, they are willing or that is part of the policy! ANyway, let us know after having the transaction! That is a big money for the cost of all those food! Good Luck friend![/i]

Oh no what a bummer! I am sorry to hear you have lost your christmas meat, especially seeing as it is really not cheap is it at the minute? I am not sure how claiming on the insurance works, but the only trouble with making a claim is that it sends your insurance premiums up, so if I could manage without claiming then I would not and also I am not sure, but I think the excess goes up, but as I say dont quote me on that as not sure.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, Ellie - it sucks! It always seems to happen when you're fully stocked, too - never just before shopping day. It IS hard to decide whether to claim or not - and you also have to take into consideration whether you'd lose your no-claims bonus and have to pay a higher premium next year. It's a real shame you couldn't have popped some of your goodies in a kind neighbour's freezer for a while ... surely they wouldn't have minded babysitting your beef and turkey! A few years ago my daughter lost the contents of her fridge and freezer when they had bushfires in the area and the power was down for five or six days. Their insurance paid up, but it was Christmas time and like you, they had a heap of food which was lost.

Hi Guybrush, The food was already defrosted so I wouldn't risk re freezing especially with the chicken and turkey but my neighbours would have rallied round if it was just to put some food in to save from wasting. I ate out the evening before so I don't know how long it had been defrostong either, the freezer power light is on but it not freezing for some reason. Yes it always happens when full never empty I agree. I have taken pics and listed all the items and will see how viable it is when I speak to the underwriters as to whether I claim or not. Such a waste of food though. Huggles. Ellie :D
