Transport in large cities

My home country has London as its capital city. It has underground trains called the tube. It has buses and suburban trains. It has many mainline train stations like Victoria, Waterloo, Paddington, Kings Cross and Liverpool Street. I love to travel on trams and have been on them in Amsterdam, Lisbon, Budapest, San Francisco and Melbourne. In Venice there are many canals so water taxis operate. Which kinds of transport has you seen in cities you have visited? Which is your favorite kind of transportation in a city?

My absolute favourite was "Le Truck" in Tahiti, mainly because of the name! It is basically a truck which is enclosed at the back like a bus, and you pile in and sit on wooden benches. It goes around the island and you can get on or get off wherever you like. Here in Sydney we have buses and trains. Our public transport system constantly comes under public complaint because it is inefficient and expensive. The problem is that Sydney is a vast city without the population to support a better system. Poor public transportation means that a lot of people choose to drive to work, which in turn causes major traffic jams in peak times. Taxies are also very expensive. In the last few years we have had bus lanes (for buses, taxies and motorbikes only) which helps the situation, but a total overhaul of the system is required. It has been the downfall of many a politician here in Sydney.

Many modern cities have the same convenient public transport system which are air-conditioned and fully automated, arrives and departs perfectly on schedule. But other places have more exciting transport like the horse, elephant, camel, dog or human-driven carriages. When I was in primary and secondary school in Manila, we went to school every morning on horse-driven carriages called "calesa" as our "school bus".

I love the trams! We are very fortunate in that respect in the UK as many of our cities now have them, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, London and of course the most famous being Blackpool, the traditional trams. I loved the double decker trains in Amsterdam they were my all time favourite, I want the chance again to travel on them. I have even been on a horse and cart which was the main transport on Sark, one of the Channel Islands now that was an experience, you could either cycle but cars were prohibited and I found that weird but also very endearing.

I thought that the tuk tuk's in Bangkok were great fun - I love the tube in London too as think it is a really good system! x
