Acceptable Bigotry

Some would say that there is no such thing as acceptable bigotry, and they should be right, but sadly aren't. There is a lot of acceptable bigotry in our society. We still base many of our laws, regulations, policies and community standards on stereotypical preconcieved notions of groups of people. "The Rich", "The Poor", "The Middle Class". Each of these do have legitimate definitions and there is nothing wrong with using the terms as demographic classifications. However, we often slide into the cesspool of acceptable bigotry when we start judging individuals based on the socio-economic class they happen to find themselves at the time. It's ironic, many would gasp in horror if someone said, "the poor are a bunch of thieves", yet the same gaspers feel completely comfortable making the same accusations about "the rich". The ONLY difference is, it isn't socially acceptable to think of the poor that way, but it is very acceptable to think of "the rich" that way. Then there is the example of "the religious" vs "academics". Are religious people really less intelligent than academics? Are all academics really socially inept bookworms who would rather spend a weekend researching some elusive point than getting out and going fishing? The answer is, some are, some aren't... just like any other group of people. However, the words "religious" and "academic" are often used to justify bigotry and discrimination. I'm not pointing fingers here, I do it myself at times. I know not all liberals are for abortion on demand, but I don't always make that clear in a discussion on abortion, or liberals. But then again, it would bog down our discussions if we felt the need to disclaim and qualify everything we say, wouldn't it.

I agree with the premise you put forth but don't know that I would agree with it being defined as bigotry. It's generalizations and pre-conceived notions, yes, but bigotry is such an ugly word. I do agree that we shouldn't have to add a disclaimer to everything we post and I don't believe that there are too many of us who try to put anyone into one single box. We should all know by now that not many of us fit into just one.

Bigotry is when generalizatoin and pre-conceived notions are the justification and motivation for hatred.

I think bigotry is the result of a closed mind, and of inflexible thinking, but it can also just be the result of careless thinking. If I ever do or say something that shows bigotry, then that it is a fault in me. Rational thought and self examination can reduce, or deter, stereotypical thinking. It seems to me that real bigots simply repeat something they have heard or read, without thinking it through properly, and accepting an idea without bothering to find out the truth. Bigotry comes from fear, misunderstanding and the inability to form an opinion.

That is often the case, but I've known bigots who had nothing against their target group UNTIL they got to know more people in it. For instance, I knew people in the Army that never knew any Black people befor they enlisted. They had no dislike for Black people, they just didn't know any. But after getting to know a lot of Black people, they started disliking Black people in general. Now, it could be said that they had some kind of prejudice that didn't come out until they got to know a lot of Black people, which could be true, but it also shows that ignorance or fear isn't always the reason for bigotry.

The holly middle class, and the salt of the earth working class is the biggest form of bigotry. Those two classes can do not wrong and politicians must bend over backwards to help them out. Then there is those evil upper class who cannot nothing right, well unless if them are wealth liberals who want to pay more in taxes. "The poor are a bunch of thieves", well I say that all the time, maybe that is why no one likes me. The poor are a bunch of thieves, they take yet do not contribute.

Every class or group have their examples of bigotry. no group or class automatically deserves our respect or distain simply because of their group or class.
