Why do you buy new mobile phone?

It's been 3 years since I last bought a mobile phone. I'm still using that old phone now. It's getting a bit run-down and old but I wouldn't spend more on mobile phones anymore. To me, it's a liability and it depreciates in value FAST. Furthermore, the current mobile phone has all that I ever needed - I didn't even use 70% of the features! So will you still buy a new mobile phone and why? p/s.... I do get tempted to buy new phones such as IPhone and Omnia...they are cool but I think I can use the cash more efficiently.

My newest cell phone was a gift to me and the last one I bought was because I have lost my other cell phone (wait I think that one was a gift too) (?) In any case I do not believe it broke anyone's bank

:O Mobile phones are not cheap you know? Buying a new phone in my country can actually feed me for 1-2 weeks ...or up to 1 month, if it's a smart phone!

Maybe so, but my cell was bought on my country, maybe that will get me a small grocery bag that might feed my family for a couple of days or more if I am smart, if depends on what I buy and from where.

In my country, we don't have those subscription packages like those in the UK or US. That's why one might need to spend 20-50% of one's monthly salary for a mobile phone.

As you know, with all the cell phone service providers weather it's here in U.S. or any other country for that matter, their majority of income comes from monthly service bill we pay. Their income from pre-paid isn't that much. Even with 1 - 2 year contract, it takes the service providers on an average, somewhere between 16 - 18 month to make back the discount you have gotten on your phone. I know every company & country they operate in are different. I'm just speaking in general term. Like I stated above, here in U.S., service providers set aside somewhere between $15 - $25 of your bill, depends on how much you bill is, for the recovery of the cost of the discount they gave you. Now, that being said, last 4 - 6 month of your contract, you're basically paying $15 - $25 a month extra. Or, their profit goes up by $15 - $25 a month, per person. If 100 thousand of their customer's contracts are to expire with in next 4 - 6 month, you know what that means? Right now, they're making extra $25 million dollars a month. Point I'm trying to make here is, if you're paying the same amount of money every month & they're not giving you extras at the end of your contract as far as service goes, then might as well get a new phone. You're paying for it weather you want to or not. Once they make up for the discount you got on the phone, they don't give you discounts on your service. They just keep that money they've been getting from you to put towards the phone discount. They do have some cheap phones or even free ones that you can keep as back up phones.

In my country, one of the telcos is doing something like this but the package is ridiculous. Few of my friends have studied the plan and noticed that the users will end up paying much more for the phone discount. =_= Hope this one telco's move will trigger other telcos. Let them fight it out and maybe my country will be able to have more good packages like in Singapore or US.

Well, usually it is because a new nicer, more up to date model came out. I used to be like that. then I started slowing down on buying and changing my phone. I really didn't use all their functions anyway. Right now, I just bought myself a V9 motorola last February for my birthday so I don't really expect to buy a new one soon.

That's usually the case. Newer models, nicer features, cooler and slicker look. :) That's how they tempt you. Hahhaha.

It has been 4 months since I last bought a samsung mobile phone, which is still kind of brand new. The first time that I bought a new one was due to I lost the former one! Last time, my old one was dropped from a high building to the ground. Then, you know, it was broken

The old one doesn't go, the new one won't come :P Just be careful next time. Phones are not cheap. And good attractive phones are even more expensive!

hi friend, i also agree with u that spending money for getting new mobile phones is just foolishness if ur present one has all the features. But,we have to move with the world.I get tempted to buy new phones which are stylish even if i have a good one. So it depends on the person... If u have money u can buy or else dont.

The only reason I got the new phone I have now is because T-Mobile has good service and the phone was free. I have not had a good cell phone in the last year because everywhere else charges a arm and leg for a cell phone and then you have to pay such high deposits. With T-Mobile I did have to pay a deposit and I got the phone free.

That's what I like about UK and US. In my country Malaysia, you don't get such deals. I've never heard of any plans by the telco companies which give FREE mobile phones. =_=

I am not interested in changing my cell phone very often. It is highly impossible to change your phone into a latest one as every day dozens of models are pouring in into the market. So a decent one is always enough for me and I have better things to do than wasting my time on hunting for new models. But Of late I got a liking for this Iphone after a long time. Some what I wanted to buy that one.I am going to buy that next month.
