Christmas Pud!

When I was younger I remember my dad always putting brandy ontop of the Christmas pudding and setting light to it whilst my brother's and I looked on in amazement! I also remember my mum shoving a 5 pence piece into it too (the sixpence had gone out of circulation by then) and being gutted if I didn't get it especially as one of brother's usually did and would taunt me about it for what was left of the Christmas day, ending in tears as Christmas day tends to, it's almost traditional! Due to inflation I now shove a 20p into our pudding, still pour the brandy on, set light to it (much to my kids amazement), dish it up and cover it with clotted cream. When I was kid my dad would only allow us to have brandy butter or a brandy sauce probably because he had made it. Even though he is Cornish there was no clotted cream to be seen on our pud only on the mince pies!
What do you do with your Christmas pudding? What do you eat it with?

I always have custard and my husband likes it with cream. The children don't like Christmas pudding, they prefer ice cream. My parents always send goody's over from England around season time, if they can't come over... yumyum.

Am I strange when I confess that I can't stand Christmas pudding? Never could, even as a child I would happily turn my nose up at it! My dad used to call it figgy pudding, I never understood why, I mean it's not made with figs is it? Mind you mum always makes a terrific christmas dinner and there is absolutely no room whatsoever for afters, dad will eat Christmas Pud any time! I used to buy him one for Christmas as he liked Mrs Peaks the best, not sure if she still makes them? He would insist on Mrs Peaks and only hers! Fussy bu**er! I love mince pies as long as there's NO cream. I am not a creamy person either, I can't bear cream, yuk! Weird ain't I! Bah humbug to Christmas, pud ;0)

Hey there wolfie34
Maybe years ago it contained figs! Like the Christmas song, We wish you a merry Christmas and it goes on to say 'So bring us some figgy pudding'. I have never heard of Mrs Peak where did you buy it? Don't you even like custard? Custard covers up a multiple of sins!!

Hi Humbug, I'm old enough to remember the sixpence LOL but like you I never got it, my mum did used to pour the brandy over and light it too, that was her tipple on Christmas day, mine is Baileys so not the same and no I don't set my pud alight, in fact I only ever have a tiny shop bought pud these days as only I like it but I have with double cream usually, the kids prefer black forest gateaux or Cheesecake, not so traditional but they enjoy which is the main thing eh! Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi ya ellie333
I am such a traditionalist! We have a gunshot on Christmas morning as well. Brandy in the coffee in the morning, brandy on the pud and I think I still have nearly a full bottle left in the cupboard from last year. I am not a big fan of brandy but like I said I am a big one for tradition. I only bought a really cheap one for this year too because I think I shall be the only one to eat it that way I don't mind if the rest gets thrown away. A bit wasteful I know but what can I do? I too love Bailey's it is my Christmas tipple too!

Hi Humbug,
Well when I was a child it was very similar to you my dad would pour brandy over it and my mum made brandy sauce it was lovely but shame on me I don't have a chrimbo pud my kids don't like it, we normally have a chocolate pud same idea but it's shop brought too BUT I do make my own mince pies and lemon meringue pie so I've redeemed myself lol

ive never had Christmas Pudding..or even clotted cream for that matter. what exactly is IN Christmas pudding?
id say the only "traditional" dessert that we have with Christmas is the pumpkin pies. cannot have a xmas without it! and when the whole family gathers for xmas dinner we usually end up with at least 2 sometimes 3 different pumpkin pies..every once in a while even a pumpkin cheesecake! which doesnt really sound very good, but is surprisingly tasty!
is Christmas Pudding hard to make?

Sounds like a fun tradition! I believe that the definition of a pudding in the UK and here are two totally different things. We don't have any one particular dessert as a Christmas tradition in American Culture. Everyone does their own thing. Pies are big in a lot of families. In fact, some friends of mine have a "pie feast". Everyone seems to have a different favorite kind and so therefore they make them all! I believe last year they had over 10 different kinds. That's their family tradition.
In my family, I would say that pumpkin (my son's fave) and dutch apple (my fave) usually make an appearance at someone's house during the holidays.
