to walk alone in the dark? I live in Phoenix, the 5th largest city in the United States, but it wouldn't bother me a bit to walk to the local convenience store after dark. Not to say, I would walk down any dark alleys by myself, but I feel comfortable walking down a main well lit street. Its never bothered me to walk alone after dark. Does it bother you?

i try my best not to live in fear of anything. that doesn't mean that i am not aware of what is going on around more or i ignore that inner feeling saying to don't go that way. but i am pretty comfortable walking to the store in the middle of the night. I mean i live in New York, and i am ok with being out late when it's dark

You hear such bad things about New York, but I suppose its like any other city. You become used to your environment and feel comfortable in it.

hi kbourgerie I used to live in Tempe and I had never been afraid to walk alone at night as long as the streets were well lit. but I was about six months pregnant and huge, and myhusband was waiting for me at a cafe we both liked on Millstreet. He had suggested I take a cab, but I was still young and unafraid. I did take some short cuts and the streets were not so well lit on these short cuts. I only had about three blocks to go but Iwas getting winded because of the baby and my weight. I slowed down to get my breath then glanced around,I was being followed by a man, he stopped when I did, then moved when I did. I panicked , I saw one of the main streets had a police car pulled in to get gas at a service station. I ran practically to get to him. He looked at me and saw I was really freaked out. I told him a man had been following me, and i described him. He asked his partner to call for another car. He asked me to wait there, then he walked back where I had been and this man was peeking into someone;s bedroom window, the same man. He arrested him and brought him back over to his car. the other police car pulled up and the officer I spoke to suggested I get in the other car and the other officer would drive me to the cafe where my husband was waiting. needless to say when I came in a police car everyone was gaping at me. I had to explain allthat had happened to my husband who had been getting really worried about me. He and I both thanked the cop and he left. my hubbyreally scolded me for not having used the money to call a cab. After that I al ways stuck to well lit streets in the main part of town.

Thank goodness that policeman pulled in when he did. That must have been really scary, especially being pregnant and all. Your poor husband was probably frantic. I'm glad it all turned out ok.

Depends where I am walking. When walking after dark you have to be aware of neighborhood safety. I can walk after dark in my neighborhood, but I wouldn't in many places in Chicago.

I'm the same way. I'll walk anywhere in the dark, but for some reason alley ways do scare me a bit if I'm alone.

Hi Rose. How are you? Someone else commented that they lived in New York and weren't afraid to walk after dark. Perhaps you just become acclimatized to wherever you live and learn where to walk after dark and where not to.

I love walking in the dark my friend, there is something therapeutic about walking alone in the dark, probably because it's much quieter and less traffic on the road, I love it when the moon is the only light. In my younger days, I wouldn't do it now but I would walk through the woods in the dark, I wasn't scared because I had the moon to show me the way and it was how I did a lot of my thinking. It was so calm and peaceful just to sit on a bench after a walk and ponder life. It all depends on the area you are in, some areas are safer than others.

Well, i am certainly afraid of walking alone in a dark alley... since here in my area... crimes usually happen there... so it would be best to choose a route that is longer but is well lighted... better be safe than sorry... that is what i believe in...

I think that people should walk out at night. If we clear the streets it means that the thugs have beaten us. That said, I'm paranoid about my daughter and her friends. When they're here I've been known to stay up and taxi them all home well into the small hours. LOL. Take care and be safe.

Hi Kb,
I would not walk alone in the dark anywhere. You, like me grew up in a time when we were realatively safe to do so. But today, we are surrounded with perverts, killers, rapists theives and you name it. We live in desperate times. The stress of our economy has brought out the bad in people. People do things today, that they never could have imagined doing before. I freak out when I see women and young girls walking alone in the dark. Anything can happen anywhere. Please think a little harder about this. Don't be another statistic. Take care of yourself.
