Moving is something I'm looking forward to

Last year in July we moved from a big town that you could say is almost a city now as the population has grown and the rental properties is in high demand. We had no choice but to move because we were living in a condo type sidebyside. We had one month to either move out or had an option to buy. With the option to buy it wasn't that simple especually if your credit isn't so great so the only other option we had was to move. For that whole month we picked up the paper every friday and checked to see what was up for rent. We found a reasonable place in the country which was a two bedroom home with a huge yard and most appliances included.
At the time when we moved in, the landlord told us that the basement was unliveable so we lived with that.
Now a year and a half later, the basement is very wet with at least 2 inches of water on the concrete floor with mold showing up everywhere you look. Not only is the mold downstairs but it has relocated to the upstairs where you can see it on all the walls.
In the bedroom corner walls there is mold spots that are growing up the wall half way to the ceilings (my son's room) and my hubby and my room. In the bathroom there is mold showing up near the tub and around the drains and also on the wall underneith the towel hooks where they hang. In the bathroom there's a closet with four shelves where the mold has grown onto as well and last but not least the wood cupboards in there and behind the toilet.
In the living room we've also noticed mold showing up on our belongings such as a wicker telephone table which we had to throw out and in the front door closet. Mold grew on all of our shoes and bags which we also had to get rid of.
In the kitchen all over the walls and cupboards are spots or fuzz which is mold are growing too.
When I was packing our things to move into the new house, I was taking out the silverware from the spoon drawer and in the plastic silverware holder was mold growing on that too. It's pretty much everywhere.
We told the landlord about this and other things that needed repairwork in this house and they've just decided to avoid us all together so now they are never home and don't seem to want to fix any of this.
Now I know why they don't live in this house instead of their other house which is next door.
I have already contacted the health inspector and he wants to talk to the landlord then I'm guessing steps are going to be looked into.
I'm worried about this place being rented to the next tenants. These landlords are going to kill someone.
We are moving out this weekend and I'm very much looking forward to that.
We still owe these landlords two weeks of rent but we're not paying them because of our belongings getting ruined and if they ask us why we're not paying for it we're going to tell them that we're leaving our moldy couches and if they want to put it up for sale then they can collect their rent money that way. It's either that or we'll tell them that they've already bought our stuff.
How would you handle this issue?

well, you've already called the health inspector..
so,maybe a call to HUD as well, and definetly take pictures of EVERYTHING destroyed by the mold.that way you have evidence if he throws out your stuff.they'll probably recommend putting the two weeks you would have paid in escrow while it's disputed.
if anybody's coughing because of this, you might want to get that documented at the doctor's as well.

When I went to the emergency the other night the nurse wouldn't even bother the doctor to come and examine me because she said it was the mold that was doing this to me and plus because I quit smoking too. The withdrawals of nicotine was weakening my immune system while the mold was attacking it and she said the sooner I got out of there the better and once I was in the new place I would notice a difference in about a week's time.
Thanks for your comment

HUD is a housing board
http://www.hud.gov/
they help people get homes and sometimes negotiate when there's problems with an existing one.
