As much as optimism, positive thinking and visualistion is required to keep us from getting buried by pitfalls in our journey of life, it so happens that we let this thought process and visualisation become that of a lot of wishful thinking against the odds of logical evidence and conclusion sometimes leading to wrong beliefs.
Are you one who does a lot of wishful thinking ? and how easy or difficult does it get to fight it out and accept reality ?

We all do it from time to time and to different extent. The fact that it’s subjective makes us vary in degree and manner. Like my wishful thinking is never over powering. I would not wish that someday I might develop wings and fly like a bird. That would be stupid, darn stupid. I might wish to fly a chopper, that’s much sensible but I would rather not wish that as well. For I know my limitations. I would rather wish to drive a truck – that’s pretty sensible. So, I never grope for things that would never come true. Living in a utopian world might give me a nice feeling but coming back to reality would be a tough call. I know, my limitations and my wishes know that as well. There is no question of wrong beliefs from utopian wishful thinking.
Having sad this, we are humans at the end of the day, and we must not be expected to have a copy book visualisation like a visionary or a philosopher. Our wishes are our dreams and the power and strength of dreams takes us to places. And in extreme cases where we wish something that’s impossible we need help certainly. I feel, we all are attuned to our own needs, dreams, wishes and aspirations and no one can better interpret those than ourselves. When someone wishes to marry Prince Edward, I am sure she wants to marry someone who resembles the prince. And if anyone wants it really – she needs to see a shrink.

Mimpi,
The examples you have quoted are excellent. We all do a bit of wishful thinking , but as you have so rightly mentioned, they should never be over powering.
The explanation you have given is very valid and exceptional.
There is an example which come to mind, which i must share though.
For someone who desires to be successful in life, he would need to have the right visions, the right positive thinking and so on. A bit of wishful thinking too comes about and as long as it is not overpowering its fine. But if the person believes that a lottery would come his way against all the logical odds and chances and leads to wrongly believe that his success would come about in this way ,then that would be foolish indeed. That is a bit of too much wishful thinking as well.
Thanks for the great response.

hahaha...
wishing about a lottery to materialise and making plans on basis of it would be stupid thing to do. there should be a balance between what we wish for and what we are in reality, isn't it? or else we become so foolish and for some the wrong beliefs could result in psychological trauma

If one wants to be rich and famous he must start acting like a one to get those things bestowed upon him.A whimsical fretting person can never succeed in life. You have to be sure of your success and visualize that it is already there and must think that what you have to do it to go and grab it.This is the wishful thinking.

I do a heck of a lot of wishful thinking alok and pretty much do it all day, every day! But I do also like to think that I manage to keep myself grounded in reality in parallel so there is no need for me to pull myself back at any time. My wishful thinking is borne from real situations that I visualize achieving further success with; and when I reach a certain goal then I set a new one. In my opinion, the only way that wishful thinking can become a bane to our existence rather than a postive influence, is when we become all consumed in thoughts that are beyond not just logic; but our reach as well.
There is no point me wishing that I set foot on the moon 'cos it ain't gonna happen! lol. There can be a fine line between wishful thinking and daydreaming and as long as we are able to tread this fine line carefully then all is fine and the power of this positive visualization WILL release dividends.
