What do you know about making a blended family work?

So two people come together each as single parents and try to build their family together.How does this work when the kids don't get along sometimes and conflict occurs occasionally as a result.Is this normal and how can they overcome this.Do they wait and hope it will eventually be accepted and go smoothly or is this unfair to the kids?What if the kids are sort of doing some of this on purpose should that be reacted to or ignored?Tell me your input on this subject and whether or not you have had some personal experience with this.
