Technology and the Presidency

I remember quite early in the recent Presidential campaign; a lot of people were poking fun of McCain because he did not use the Internet, email, etc. How could a President run a country without knowing and using these everyday technological tools on a daily basis. Well, Obama is going to get the chance to find out now. This "modern" man, who is glued to his Blackberry is going to have to surrender it on Jan 20 when he becomes our next President. He is constantly using it and other technological tools on a daily basis. How is he going to suddenly do everything he has been doing, govern the United States, and all without the very tools he has relied on in the past? Think I am joking; I am not. It is all because of a law called the "Presidential Records Act". Here is a link to a story about what he is facing - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/16/us/politics/16blackberry.html?th&emc=th Maybe the "old guy" had a reason for not becoming too dependant on technology?

I am not surprised that this is the case as much modern technology is far from secure - a good example is when a college student hacked into Sarah Palin's email account.

I know - there is NO way to make anything 100% secure because every new security innovation is quickly followed by a new "hacker innovation". I swear, some hackers think that each new security measure was designed for the sole purpose of giving them a new challenge to solve.

I agree; it is a lot of "brain power" that is just going to waste.

He isn't forced to surrender it but of course security concerns are an issue. Additionally, all his emails and texts would be available to everybody eventually as all of it is recorded and stored. Nothing private there anymore. Come January 20th he is completely ours 24/7/365. Just a casual email to a friend would be presidential correspondence and recorded for posterity. Yeah, he will have to learn to be without his Blackberry and other internet/email/etc tools. It will be quite a change for him.

What can I say. He wanted the job and he's got the job. I just wonder if he fully realized what he was letting himself into when he decided to run. I know several people who are so "addicted" to their Blackberry, cell phones, and other "tech toys" that they claim they would "simply die without them".

It also wouldn't look good for his cell phone or blackberry to be going off while he's in conference with a foreign leader!
