Christmas Axed in Croatia

Santa's Banned! - If you live in Croatia, your company Christmas party has been canceled due to a Ba-humbug rotten economy. Christmas and New Year parties in the public sector are strictly banned. State funds are also not to be used for Christmas gifts either. Next year, public workers will get a salary freeze.

Next year, public workers will get a salary freeze."There was no need for panic, but the country had to be serious." says Prime Minister Ivo Sanader. "For that goal we forbid buying of Christmas and New Year's gifts as well as organizing of Christmas and New Year's receptions,"The Government declares it's goal of a balanced budget in 2009.

I am glad that the government of at least one country is taking their fiscal responsibilities seriously. However man does not live by bread alone and I think in these depressing times a little merriment might be in order.

I think that this 'ban' attacks the commercial celebrations and obligatory gift giving. Parties and celebrations held in private homes won't be stopped I don't think...
