Recently I came to know that in the entire software business, the contribution of OSS is 6% which accounts for 60 billion dollars. What exactly is open source software? What is its business model?

Open Source software is essentially free. The source code of the software is made available under a public domain copyright license, which permits users to change, modify and redistribute the software, either unmodified or modified. Most money from OS software tends to be made on the back end. Some examples are Linux and phpBB.
