Just as I was logging in I noticed that my wrist, the right corner, has started to discolour. I guess, we all have it to some extent. I have a friend whose is almost blackish. That goes to show the amount time he spends on computers. I am a moderate computer addict but the rate by which it’s getting dark, I do not think it will take much time to get there. And scarier is the carpal tunnel syndrome! I just hope that doesn't affect me or anyone! So guys, how dark is your carpal? Do you do anything to take care of it? I am sorry I do not do much apart from frowning now and then and I feel this is very important to keep up with our changing e-lifestyle.

Hi dear this post I started in a lighter vein and did not know this would be so informative and insightful. I hardly do anything about my wirst and have a tendencu to bend my sleep under my head while sleeping. Please refer to Leenie's and Suzy's comments for a better understanding of CTS. It's scary!

Mine seem to be normally coloured so far. I had never payed attention to this though. I can understand the discomfort one can go through due to the carpal tunnel syndrome as i have had to endure some of the symptomes some time back due to RA which had affected my wrist. From what i understand this syndrome is not necessarily limited to those using keyboards, but also those who do a lot of manual work involving the wrists. It can also be caused dut curling the wrist while sleeping. To prevent this from happening i do know that certain wrist exercises are suggested before work and being concious and adjusting our postures followed by breaks in between work. For those who start feeling the symptoms of it, ice water helps, a wrist band, a crepe bandage and even wrist splints. It's important for us to pay attention to information like what you have shared Mimpi as we with our rapidly changing lifestyles, fail to pay attention to how it affects us. Thanks for bring this up.

I am sorry to hear that, Alok. I know it's very painful and CTS could be painful, very painful. Illnesses such as hypothyroidism, RA, diabetes, obesity, then making the same hand movements over and over, especially if the wrist is bent, computer work and gardening and even smoking can cause this! I think, it has to do with reduced blood flow to the nerve. And if you have a closer look all of the above has a direct contribution in our sedentary lifestyle! It's scary isn't it?

Thankfully i don't have the problem any more. Come to think of it , we tend to neglect so much in terms of the way we work, our posture, our eyesight and ven the mental strain. a little precaution along with some amount of correction in the way we go about this will go a long way in keeping such syndromes at bay. And as you have alsosaid the sedentary lifestyle, be it our eating habits, sleeping habits, smoking, drinking , the list of don'ts goes on and on. There seems to be so much to be said on this Mimpi.

At the workplace, workers can do on-the-job conditioning, perform stretching exercises, take frequent rest breaks, wear splints to keep wrists straight, and use correct posture and wrist position. But more important is lifestyle cahnge and the consciousness. Listening from you people I fear the same. for I do get some kind of undefined pains and numbing sensation. I must take care of myself. It's better late than never. Thanks Alok for enriching this post.

So now I've gotta take care of my carpals mimpi?? I have jsut conducted a thorough check of said carpals and they are as pasty white as they have always been! lol. I do sometimes get pains in my hand musscles though from typing away for long hours every day so there are some basic stretches I do often that help with that. My advice is that once you're done with the carpals, you'd better check your butt! The last thing you want is pressure sores from all that sitting in front of the computer!

Not a bad idea! That makes much sense James. Prevention is always better than cure and i live by it. And do some curls and go to gym and typing for long hours could be painful. i get it , more because of my one finger typing thing.

I used to type at high speed up to 13 hours a day and never experienced any discomfort--you could say I typed my whole way through college, and that was about 12 years, because I went to considerably more college than most people do. Well, that is, except for one day long ago when one of the secretaries brought a special punch in for everyone to share at an office party. It was a huge delicious iced coffee bowl with several gallons of vanilla ice cream floating in it and whipped cream folded in and I had never tasted anything that good. So although I meant to only have a bit to be polite I ended up having a whole cup and then another, and then the gal who made it brought another cup to me at my desk after I had gone back to work. About 40 minutes later I could hardly type at all. Whoa, it was like my hands and wrists had gone completely arthritic or something. Egads. I had to keep working but could not get up to my usual speed and egads did it hurt! So as good as it was, I never drank any of that again! No, I have never had any discoloration of my wrist. Between you, me, and the lamp post, I believe that supplementing with B vitamins has been shown to prevent and/or alleviate the repetitive stress thing. Also avoiding caffeine. You know, in times past nobody ever heard of carpal tunnel syndrome and yet people worked on MANUAL typewriters. People spent their whole lives working factory jobs. Nobody ever heard of this modern "disease" until the word nutrition fell out of people's everyday vocabulary. It could be dietary.

Mimpi i am stunned... sure.. i have no words.. its a hair raising incident for me.. Not without reasons, why i am stupefied.. and the very reading of this topic amazes me a lot, is that just then i was showing my wrists to my parents,( by about 7.30 Pm today) and was talking about the dark brownish mark that is more pronounced in my right hand, than in the left... which is nearly a centimeter long.. and after a long discussion, which included in eliminating the complex reasons, inclusive of ruling out any skin allergy, of course that which was of the opinion of my Dad, and my finally my Mom decisively and categorically, delivered the knock out punch that it was due to the excessive use of the computers by me..and now by about 9.00 PM,24.11.2008, i was just casually surfing the latest post by my friend Mimpi... My God,. ..My words..i see a post that was started by my friend, that which i discussed moments ago.. Will not this send shivers in your spine.. when you see a friend writing about what you talked a few minutes back? Take care friend, and God bless you. P.S : Kindly don't misconstrue the above lines as that of Charles Dickens.. hehee..

Mine has just started to turn brownish. I have been using the computer this way continuously for just a year or so. I think most of us tend to just hold on to the mouse while reading something. It is due to this habit that the wrist corner gets discoloured.

Great discussion! Mines once was dark brown about 7 months back. But, for some strange reason it turned back light brown. That came from me being on the computer so long too. I have had the same thing happen to me too. I guess that I leave my wrist away from leaning on the desk top too much. I don't want to get Carpal Tunnel either. I do plan to buy me an wrist item to keep on my wrists to avoid the Carpal Tunnel effect. I wonder if they sell an item that will keep from your wrists from turning black? This is something that I am looking for and I am very interested into. I don't want my wrist to get dark just from spending hous on the computer. For some reason mines was dark, then all of a sudden it lightened back up on its own..

I don't notice any discoloration on my wrist, mimpi. But I do worry that one of these days, the doctor would tell me I have CTS. I've spent more time than I'm supposed to online and sometimes, I would only stop when my fingers are ALL sore and my arm starts to tingle. They always recommend to walk away from your computer every so often to give your hands, eyes and back some rest.

Well Sisi, this would probably be an universal symptom soon! Scary! We must ensure proper health regime. since we cannot do without computers we must take care of ourselves. I get tingles on my fingers and hand so often these days. I must star some exercises and go for, as some have advised, wrist braces and wrist rest urgently.

Hi Mimpi...Fortunately I spent only 2 or 3 hours a day in front of the Pc,so has not deveoped any skin problems as yet....I have read that too much of Pc usage causes eye problem, back problem, and often leads to obesity too..But this skin discolouration is new to me.....And judging from the responses,I understand many have it.... So Mimpi dear, instead of looking at your wrist and frowning all the time,You should keep a bottle of skin lotion near your pc,and apply it on your wrist every day without fail......If you do not follow my advice, nay ORDER,you will soon have many other people too frowning over your wrist.............

hey I didnt know about this. But my wrist doesnt seem to have changed any colour. maybe because I am not much of a computer gal. However now that I am a myLot member it is tough to stay offline. But I do think that we should take care of our health most importantly more than anything else.

I used to have that skin discoloration on my right wrist also. Since I am a heavy user of computer. But when I noticed it, I got conscious. And so I make a way to remove it and prevent having it again. I wear a wristband when going online and I put lotion on the dark area of my wrist. Its color is even now.

Wrist band is a good idea.As long as I don't get the wrist brace I can try it. I apply lotion and try to keep it soft but recently its getting darker. I must take care of it. It's high time now. Thanks.

Hi hildas the darkness is not doe to CTS. It goes to show how much time you time you are spending on computers. Prolonged use of mouse makes the wrist darker. Its alarming how sedentary we are getting and this might cause carious other problem as well and CTS could be one of them. I am glad that your wrist is OK. You take care. Thaks for dropping in.

That's good to hear, katrhina. You can actually take care of it just as any other parts of the body. It's important that we do this. Prolonged hours typing is notgood and we need intermittent break, breathers are always welcome. Have a good day ahead.
