Do software engineers follow the traditional way?

When I was in college,we were supposed to write down the aim,then draw flow chart and draw algorithms before we start writting a program.Is it still in practise?For me ,I hate flow charts and algorithms and I always liked to work it straight in the machine and then create flowcharts and algorithms.Is there anypeople favouring this or the traditional way to be followed and why?
