I keep seeing these ads. And again last night I saw it again...so I am right now checking this out online. I still wonder how exactly it works. I know that you plug it into your computer. And I know they say your phone calls are free. And that it is portable so you can take it with you anywhere you go. And the cost sounds like a really great savings...and if it is true it will save me somewhere close to $500 a year on phone bills.
But what I am wondering is do I still have to subscribe to my local internet service?
So to all you MagicJack users out there tell the low down on this little handy device.
Can you still use the phone while you are online? In my household we currently have to have two phone lines. One for the internet and one for my mother's heart monitor, because one of the lines has to stay available for the readsing to be sent to the office. She has this done once every so often and we never know exactly when so the line has to stay open. If you can still use the phone lines while online and it only costs this low amount of money it would be a great savings to my household.
Fill me in please.

I seen that infomercial several times and I think they have a really good thing going there. I don't think it mentioned anything about whether you have to keep the internet of not, but I'm guessing you do because the magic jack runs off the internet service right?
I know it doesn't give you the internet. I seen the show and they just kept saying the same thing over and over again like "take the magic jack and just plug it into any computer and start talking."
I would like the answer to your question myself.

Yes...miraclefreebreebies...you MUST have the internet....it's a little 1 and a half in by 3" that you plug into your computer, and your phone line plugs into it!
PLEASE NOTE;
1. You will NEED another phone, just for Majic Jack!
2. You will get a phone # for that phone from Majic Jack!
3. In Canada, your annual fee is $10.00
I can assure you that it is much cheaper than Skype, Vonage or many others! Just within my circle of family & friends, we have probably bought a hundred!

I do have a "Majic Jack" ...and have had so for 2 months (it has more than paid for itself in that time!)
I live in B.C. Canada, so mine is a little more complicated that if you live in the United States! (Our Federal Gov't has not approved it yet...Ma Bell doesn't want competition)
It works on anything but dial-up! And the only other requirement is that you have a dedicated phone for it.....as you will get a Majic Jack phone number! It does not affect any other phone in your home!
Yes, you can use the phone while you are on line..it is a seperate function (but part of your computer).
The real bonus is that it works anywhere in the world! My son has one, too, and he was recently in China! Because we both have Tacoma, Washington phone #'s even tho' we both live in B.C., we spent hours on the phone! We worked it out and without Majic Jack, we would have spent over $700.00 in Long Distance!
Yes, you do have voice mail....but I am not sure about call forwarding!
My intial cost was $57.00 Cdn...that included the Majic Jack and first year user fee...after that it is $10.00 a year....and of course, any spare phone you have that you can plug in! Lots at recycle/second hand stores!
Hope this is of some help to you! Have a good weekend!

I was going to get vonage before I found out about the Magic Jack. I usually pay around $50 a month for a house phone, what a rip off.

You know I've seen this little miracle on tv a few times. I'd like to see what other people say too.

i do not know anyone who has bought one so i do not know if they really save you money or not. personally we had our land line disconnected about a month ago and strictly use our cell phones now. we were wasting money on a land line since we used our cell phones most of the time anyway. i still have a line with my dsl on it and use a splitter to also hook my fax machine up to the same line so essentially we still have a land line for emergencies because the fax machine can also be used as a phone. we are trying to cut back on everything we can.

I completely understand. It does seem that no matter what noways you still hae to have a phone line if you cannt hook up to tradtitional cable for internet. Where I live there is only one phone company available to us, and it is not even available in the next county who have several availabe so I am stuck with one choice (they are not bad though), and I have bundled as much as possible. I have three cell phones on a package with a different company because our local phone company charges you long distance to call anywhere outside of the county....and on my cell it is free to call long distance.
I have done the numbers so many different ways and it comes out cheaper to keep things the way they are even though it is a small fortune I spend a month on phone communications. UGH.
But with people in the household with health complications they are a necessity. What can you do.
Read the responses especially the first one it goes into depth about using magicjack. And if you meet the requirements of use it does seem to save people quite a bit. If had anyting other than dial up it would save me close to 500 dollars a year.
So check it out.
