What are the ingerdients for someone to become the CEO of a major corporation, First you need multiply academic degrees. Next, an ego second to none is a great asset. Finally, and most important it seems is stupidity! The heads of the three major motor manufactures displayed thin when they asked the US government for hand-outs recently. Turning up in corporate jets, how stupid. It's like a beggar dressed in fashion clothes asking for money. Even my ex wife wasn't that stupid. She turned up to the property settlement dressed in her oldest clothes, and deviod of any of her jewellery. I worked for a similar CEO for many years while wondering how he got so far. What do you think of CEOs you have worked for/ with?

I mean how ridiculous arriving in a private jet to plead for financial assistance.

You forgot connections, which really are the most important qualification of all. Connections, whether legitimate or corrupt, are what launch the careers of powerful people. I myself probably won't be powerful because I'm not too great at making em, but I hear that they are everything in the business world, especially when you get to the top like the rich CEOs do. Once you've got them, it seems, you can do pretty much whatever you want with your life and still be successful (see George Bush, life history of).

I would have thought your connections get you up the ladder to upper management levels, but most CEO's are appointed by HR companies specializing in hiring people for these positions. As I write this I realize that connections would be very handy here too, so I'll agree with you, and add connections to the list.
