I have always tried to go the alternative medicine route because one it is more affordable and also if done correctly it is just as helpful and better for your body in the long run.
I am not a fan of drugs by any means, but I'll pop a Tylenol if I need one. And obviously if the alt med does not work I will then go to the doctor to see what medicinally will be helpful.
And for anyone out there who uses alternative meds make sure you pick up a reference book that not only talk about the herbal meds but how they may interact with other meds as well...even your multi-vitamins.
You can buy books like the Physcian's Desk reference (PDR for short), Nurse's guide to medications (smaller version of the traditional PDR), there are pocket guides, and even you can use online sources like WebMd.
The point is don't just go by the label.
Personally one of my favorite alt meds during the cold season is Zicam. I was introduced to this years ago and swear by it now. There are many forms of this because it comes as a nasal spray, tablet, or swabs. Personally i shoot for the nasal spray gel. And it works. It is mainly made up of Zinc, which is a healing ingredient.
As far as I know there are no side affects with Zicam. I have never expereinced any whatsoever.
I also use Echinacea in combo with Zicam. I take two capsules a day to boost up my immune system for about a week.
So do you use Zicam?
