Gratuitous self-promotion

Opinion time. I was just over at AC, having a look around and reading about their 'Best new CP' award (CP = Content Producer, i.e. writer). The way they work it is that they ask for nominations in the forum. I was looking because I was utterly surprised to be nominated by someone!
However, that's beside the point. Looking through the nomination thread, I was disgusted (and I mean that in the strongest terms) by the number of people nominating THEMSELVES. Literally posts saying "I would like to nominate myself. I'm new and I think I'm a good writer."
Does anyone else find this not only horribly immodest, but disgusting? It actually turns my stomach to see people promoting themselves for a recognition award in an attempt at having extra cash or fame. For me, it goes against everything beautiful and pure in being a writer. Yuck.
Thoughts?

I haven't bothered to read that thread, but it's not surprising that people nominate themselves. Personally, I wouldn't do it, but a lot of people would just consider it a normal part of self-promotion. I don't think it's disgusting, but if you see writing as beautiful and pure, then I can see why you would. Without trying to be offensive, I'd just like to suggest that your attitude is somewhat naive, and if you're going to survive in the world of online writing, you need to grow out of it. Writing is just as competetive as any other profession, and unless you're so talented that your work just knocks everybody right out of their socks, then you have to use self-promotion, and hope for a bit of luck along the way.
I'm not much on self-promotion myself, so what little I do is very laid back. I prefer to comment on other people's work (when I can do so honestly and favorably), and participate on appropriate forums that let me use a sig. I hope you can find a good self-promtion balance for yourself.

I'd typed a huge response, but the system ate it. Poop.
Summary: yes, you're right and no, no offense taken at all! We do have to self-promote. I don't have a problem with that when it's normal methods, such as appropriate links on forums, telling people you've published and so on. I've worked in online publishing before and marketing is a must: we have to show what we can do, to earn more work!
Here, we have people nominating themselves for a merit award. By definition, the award should be earned because of the quality of what you do, not because you scream and shout and wave your arms around a lot until someone notices. If I were on the panel for this award, anyone nominating themself would be immediately eliminated.
Call me an idealist. Call me a purist. You'd be right. *grin*

At least that means we can be knights in shining armour...
I liked the Alerts idea, too. Neat idea. It must be horribly difficult to maintain for blog entries, so I think I shall stick with only using it for articles for the moment!
Thanks for your comments: it's great to have a proper discussion on things close to our hearts!
