light up or light down?

Visiting in the US and coming from the UK,I've noticed many homes here have either floorstanding lamps plugged into wall sockets,or elaborate multibulb ceiling light fittings...whereas in the UK,in my experience, many homes would have (depending on the room size!) a single pendant light fitting in the centre of the ceiling..My Fiancee's place had some remodelling work done recently, and the electricians had only fitted a single bulb ceiling light with a bare bulb..I decided to buy her a lampshade to improve the look of it,but COULD I find a place that sold a downward facing lampshade that would clip onto a bulb? I could get any number of standard floorstanding lamp shades with the conical shape / \ suited for that purpose, but there were NONE to be found that would simply clip onto the Bulb..if had been able to fit the ones that I could find, they'd have looked like \ /..not what I wanted..at the finish up,She called the electricians back in and had them fit more appropriate ceiling units,as the bare bulb look would have been better suited to a Garage! So..What are the lighting conventions where you live? Ceiling or floor? Chandelier or single bulb? Ever been frustrated finding what you wanted getting your room "Look" just right?

I only have ceiling fixtures in my dining room and kitchen. The lights in the bathrooms are all on the walls just above the mirrors. So I use lamps in the living room, bedrooms and den. It's the only way to have any light in these rooms. I do remember when I was younger that all rooms had some kind of ceiling fixture, but that was years ago. No modern home is built with ceiling fixtures anymore except these for these 2 rooms. Some people are now starting to add chandeliers in their bedrooms. But I prefer using lamps. I hope your fiancee is now happy with her lighting fixtures.

It must be a simplification of design thing,in that it's easier and simpler to have no wiring in the ceiling that could cause problems or need somebody to go up there to fix something with the risk of falling through...

I am a big Ikea fan and tend to have a lot of florr lamps that give out a more sublte light rather than have the ceilinglight on as I find this one too bright!

I would use a floor standing "Uplighter" lamp more often than not in the living room..Other rooms I wouldn't use as much wouldn't have additional lighting in there..
