Our province has celebrated the Wildlife Month and with that, there are many activities. One such activity is the mask making contest.
Students from La Consolacion College-IS, wearing masks representing the critically-endangered Visayan Warty Pig, took the award for the best masks in Wednesday's 'Animals of Negros' foot parade in Bacolod City.
The parade, which started at the Provincial Lagoon and finished at the Bay Center, is a highlight of the annual Negros Wildlife Month which aims to create wider awareness of the need to protect and conserve the diverse, colorful and remarkable endemic wildlife of the island.
This year's parade featured students from local schools plus government and non-government organizations including BACIWA, the DENR-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, DENR-Community Environment and Natural Resources Office, the Provincial Environment Management Office, Negros State College of Agriculture and MUAD-Negros.
Some 800 students from the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School I adopted the Negros tube-nosed fruit bat as their flagship species. They took the award for the most number of students to take part. The award for the best gimmick went to St. Benilde School with their Visayan Spotted Deer masks.
Negros Forests & Ecological Foundation staff and volunteers donned Visayan Writhed Hornbill masks.
The Negros Wildlife Month is supported by GTZ, an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development, the Provincial Governor's Office and Robinsons Place.
