Years ago I parked my little mini car outside the biggest hotel here in Melbourne in hope of meeting Liberace, well on the second night he showed up in a beautiful big limo at 3am, my friend and I were the only ones there so we got autographs and I took two photos, and at that time I had a cheap little camera and unfortunately the flash didn't go off, so all I could see were a couple of little sparkles and the rest all black, I was so disappointed, well last week I bought this little gadget that I can plug into my computer and make photos out of slides and negatives so I thought i would put my Liberace slides in to see what I could do so I was thrilled at the result...the man in this photo was the doorman at the time, his name was Stanley, he looked after my friend and i while we were waiting and he asked if I would take a photo of him with Liberace and when the slides turned out the way they did of course sadly I couldn't give him a copy so wouldn't it be nice if Stanley was a member here and he could finaly get the photo of himself with Liberace...if your out there Stanley..here is your photo...

Hi Lilaclady, When my Grandparents came out to Australia from Scotland, they were on the same plane as the Beatles when they arrived in Melbourne. When Papa went to collect his violin, (a Stradivarius) it was not found, they discovered it was loaded on to the bus with the Beatles gear. Papa, had to contact the Southern Cross hotel and get in contact with them to get his violin back. He went to the hotel and he got it back after they sorted out who's was what.

I've only seen pics of it, and yes the crowds were humungous. I was just a little tacker then, but funny it was.

This is more SC memories, duing the 1980's I went to the SC because there were the touro shops at the bottom, one of them sold didgeridoos. I was looking for a good one, I selected one after trying a few and asked the shop attendant if he minded if I played it to see how it went. "Go ahead' he responded. So, I sat down on the floor, crossed my legs and started playing. It was a good sound, so I closed my eyes and gave this didg heaps, all the mouth sounds and stomach and throat sounds I could muster. After a few minutes, I stopped, opening my eyes, and about to stand up, when I realized a crowd had formed and they were all standing at and around the doorway watching and listening to me, then they all started clapping. You know that funny feeling then you go red, oh oohhh. I lowered my head and thanked them, quickly paid for the instrument and as I was about out the door, the fellow asked if I wanted to try some more, I said thank you but this one is fine, and vamoosed. I still play sometimes, but just for me. It's personal.

How well I remember Liberace. My mother thought he was simply wonderful until he too that young Australian lad under his wings, and then she got a bit concerned. I cannot remember the young entertainers name but think he was on Young Talent Time for a while. Great that you were able to get a decent photo from the negative and more so as it was not possible to do so at the time you actally took the photo. The wonders of science and new inventions ... there are very few boundaries these days and congratulations lilaclady on the decision to buy the gadget. Perhaps you will find there are some more interesting photos which you can now "salvage" in the same way. Maybe you could write to the Herald Sun or one of the magazines, as someone will surely know who Stanley is and whether or not he is still alive. Of course there might be some "old hand" still working at that hotel who could tell you Stanley's name etc. I am sure that even after all these years Stanley would be very happy to get a copy of the photo. If Stanley is not a myLot member, then good luck in finding him through other means lilaclady.

Those photos were taken on the night of the award show that he was on where he met Jamie Redfern who was the young boy you mentioned and it just so happens I know someone who is good friends with Jamie and he said Liberace was just what seemed to Jamie , just a good friend trying to help him in the industry nothing but a nice man...i liked Liberace very much and he was so nice that night to us, just lovely...

Thanks for reminding me of Jamie Redfern's name lilaclady. Yes he did spend a number of years in the U.S. from memory and I can remember reading an interview he did on one trip back here to Australia. I am not sure where he is now or what he is doing but no doubt with the talent he had, he is still involved in the entertainment industry.

its called Otek film scanner...the only thing i don't like is you have to actually take the actual film out of the cardboard suuround to mount them in the scanner but once i get the photos i won't need them as slides anymore....

That is so thrilling. I'm so happy for you. Stanley may still work at the hotel, if not they may forward it to him. You could send it there in care of the hotel. Just a thought, lol.
