My daughter and her family went to her in-laws up in Duluth Saturday night. This was the night we had the blizzard up north with the artic temps etc. Well they left one car here as she visited all day Saturday and her husband drove here from his work then they left from here. They got stuck once in his parents driveway as the snow was over the underside of their car. Then they also needed to be towed from getting stuck as well. They survived and the kids loved being towed etc laughing a lot I heard. They are back but were so tired they forgot to stop off to get their other car. Anyhow with the cold temps etc here in my city, I started her car daily for her to keep the engine from siezing up and or freezing. I finally cleared the snow from it (6 inches+) and let it run melting the ice etc from the windshield. Have you ever taken care of a relative or friends vehicle as they were on a short trip/jaunt at all? They will get the car soon I hope. It's still sitting in the drive as this photo shows.

I'm glad all are fine and the kids loved the towing..shame we all can't have those attitudes as we get older..
I've kept peoples cars for them but never had to worry about a snowstorm..

I hate driving in the snow and watch the weather report if I have to travel. I hate to sound judgmental but I would not have gone out in a blizzard with my family and put them at risk. Things can turn ugly fast if you get lost or off the beaten track.
The problem with cars is that I think all the designers seem to live in California and they design vehicles that are not quite practical for snow belt areas. The windows fog and frost up too easily and the wipers tend to freeze on the windshield when you turn off the car. If these people lived in Winnipeg they would be designed different. I see finally that one car maker is giving people an electric heater until the car warms up. I find that on most cars the heater is under designed for really cold weather, I could go on and on.
I have had my own problem with my car as I let it sit for about a week and the gas line or something froze up and would not start. I put in some gasline antifreeze and plugged it in and it started the next morning luckily. Yes you are very generous to keep the car started and kept running as cars can quickly deteriorate in the cold weather if left unused. The problem seems to be too that the battery is being used even when the car is off these days and the battery is in jeapordy of discharging and freezing.

All the things you mention about a car being maufactured are ex[pected with the types of materials pout into building a car. Rubber will freeze onto glass when it gets wet and the temps are below the dfreezing point. There have been engine heaters as long as I can recall. It either heats the engine block or the oil. It plugs into a standard outlet. But with a well maintained vehicle you really dont need those except to help the car spew forth heat quicker. Mine started very easily in the -20F temps the other day. First try and no pumping the gas pedal needed. IN temperastures like I get here the car companies etc suggest not having less than a half tank of gas in the vehicle. Water condenses in the tank then and causes the fuel line to freeze. I alsys try to have half to a full tank most nights in the winter time.

We had to take care of our sons's cars when they were at home, and had to take either one of them to University or to work when it was very cold. And we had to call Canadian Tire to bring a rental car while their batteries were getting charged. Now this did not happen all at once, but I remember that it happened almost every winter. It has happened to my husband's car and he had to take the bus to work and call Canadian Tire to pick up the car and charged it. Seems rather common here in Manitoba and I guess Minnesota has a similar climate.

Same here as far as temps go.
Well below normal for another week or so and more snow due Thursday through Sunday as well. I love Minnesota in the winter months actually. To a point that is actually. It hasn't been nasty actually. Just really cold early in the season is all. We have been told to expect a colder and snowier than normal winter so this is normal as far as Farmers Almanac goes.

You did a good job GB getting the snow cleared from around the car.
I did keep my daughters car once for her while she was serving in the military. I had to drive it around to keep the battery charged and the engine working. I couldn't go to far in it or in a lot of traffic, because it was a 4 speed and I am not good at driving a standard shift car. But I did a good job with what I did know and kept the car in good shape for her.

There was about 60 or more inches of snow on it.
I hadn't cleared it off the other times I started it for them.
The wipers were frozen to the glass from the rain we had Sunday as well.
Now she called and they're getting the car later tonight.
Good deal and you did a fine job as well I am sure.

I really am glad your daughter and her family are ok Bob. That sure was a serious blizard by the looks of all the photographs I just seen. Glad the kids where able to laugh about it all.
I would take care of my Mothers car when she goes abroad. My husband would start it also and he gives it a wash sometimes.
I left my car with her when I went to Turket for two weeks last year. It had a full tank of petrol in it and when I returned there was none. I guess she liked to drive about in it while we where away.

This really wasn't all that bad.
We've had much worse in past years.
Halloween Day 1991 we got 48 inches in a 24 hour period.
That shut sown a lot of cities for a couple days.
Anyone other than mom I would have asked for cash to fill the tank some.

I have not experienced a blizzard before and probably never want to, but having seen such weather hazards in film, I guess it must be quite scary for your daughter and her family to be subjected to one. Hope wherever they travel during this season, they will be safe.
I heard on the news a couple of days back that much of the US except for places like the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida have been plagued by outbreaks of cold air and winter storms, spreading snow, freezing rain and flooding rain in some places. There's even snow in a desert place like Las Vegas. The freak cold weather must be playing havoc with many commuters in US.
