Did You Ever Drive Before You Got Your Learners Permit?

I didn't do this but know people who have. Some people just are so impatient to start driving that they start doing it before getting their learners permit.

I was 7 when I learned to drive, and I ploughed my first field when I was 9. The field was right by the road, and my father sent the hired man with a team of horses to harrow it down and cover up the messy furrows. I'll never forget that experience. My little brother was 5 when he drove the tractor,( which was parked by the barn) a quarter mile up the road to Grandma's house, where he turned into her drive, parked the tractor and turned off the ignition. When Grandma realized what he had done she phoned Mom all in a panic. My little brother was so small he had to stand on the clutch with both feet to get the tractor into gear, but he loved that machine and just wouldn't stay away from it. After that ride my dad started taking the keys, so he couldn't get it started. Farm kids learn to operate machinery at a very young age!

Kids on the Farm don't look at it as "fun." When you are out there sitting on a hard tractor seat for 4 or 5 hours at a time and several days in a week the fun part very soon wears off. Every one had to work when I was a kid, even the Kids! (70 years ago)

yeah i've heard about that and young kids driving cars on the farm. something kind of dumb i use to do when i was about 7 or 8 was i used a riding lawn mower to mow the yard which was way to young for my age and to think what could of happened but my grandfather heard about it and paniced and my parents only let me drive the riding mower when the blade was off from now on. I really enjoyed because i was so young at the time when mowing the yard like that. i didn't think of what could happen which made it funner to ride and mow.

No, I didn't, though I knew a few people that did. Just like most kids I was impatient about getting my permit, but I was willing to wait it out before going behind the wheel.

When I was about 10 or 11, I used to ask my dad if I could steer the car. He would usually let me as long as it wasn't a busy road. He controlled the gas and break and I got to turn the wheel. Of course he would always keep his hand on the wheel in case he had to take over. A few years later, in high school, I started to hang out with the wrong crowd. Unfortunately, one of them was my boyfriend. One night they decided to steal a car and they came to pick me up. He asked if I wanted to drive it and I thought it would be fun. It was not an automatic car and I had no idea how to drive standard shift. We decided that he would tell me when to push the clutch and he would do the shifting. I drove all around my neighborhood and had lots of fun. I finally made a turn to quickly and almost crashed into 2 parked cars. I freaked out a little and hit the curb really hard. The tire got messed up and I couldn't get it out. We finally gave up and decided to leave the car there. Before we left, we made sure to wipe down the inside of the car to remove our finger prints. The next morning we walked to where I lodged the car on the curb and it was gone. I can only assume the owner called it in stolen and they found it since it was left in the same neighborhood it was stolen. Eventually I realized they weren't the friends I wanted and we went our separate ways. My parents were really happy that I got away from all that bad influence.

Yes, I did and that is how I learned to drive. I live in the country so it was easy for me. I would get on one of those long country roads and just drive away. My uncle would be with me sometimes to see if I was driving and obeying all the rules, so that I would be able to pass the driving test.

My sisters and I started driving very young out in the hayfields. Long before we could get a permit we knew how to drive a manual stick shift so an automatic was easy. Of course driving on the roads, highway traffic etc did have a learning curve and require practice. There are area's here in the countryside where kids that are too young for a license can get a provisional permit so they can drive themselves just to school and back because they don't live on a bus route and it's too far to walk.
