Barking in the night

I hardly got any sleep last night in my bedroom upstairs because my two dogs kept barking. I jumped out of bed and went downstairs into the lounge to tell them off. However it happened again and again. I felt on tender hooks because of my neighbors. Yesterday my friend saw the cat that comes back here every so often. I opened my gate this morning and there was the cat. He has got my dogs barking and I will not be popular if they bark on Christmas Eve. He belongs to a lady that moved more than a year ago however her cat loves the neighborhood. It has fields at the back, a cats dream. I have put newspaper over my patio door so my dogs won't be able to see out. Have you any suggestions to make my dogs not bark this Christmas please? Has your dog ever bothered you with barking in the night? Thanks.

This may sound a bit weird maximax, but my Mother used this method with our dog many years ago and it worked a treat! It will take a few days to sink in though..... She filled a spray bottle with citronella and water and everytime our dog barked and barked, she would blast him in the chest with the spray. He hated the smell (and it didn't hurt him), so in time he came to associate barking with being stinky citronella blasted and he stopped! It took around 3 nights from memory. Unfortunately the newspaper may block their sight, but they will still probably hear the cats and maybe smell them, so it may not work too well.

The only thing I do is go see what my dogs are barking at and tell them to stop. It drives me nuts. However, I make sure I tell them to hush. My male dog loves to bark at cats to. Not sure why. He used to get along with them. Now all he wants to do is chase them. Good luck, maybe you could put your dog in another room for the night.

Hello, Maximax8. I have never had trouble with my dog barking. Usually, he will only bark if something serious is going on. He doesn't bark for no reason. But yes, if he saw a cat he would also bark. To avoid this, you can put him to sleep inside your home for the night. Only for this night. Or you can take the cat and put it in your house. The lady won't even know, just make sure you treat the feline well. People sure are comprehensive, but they will complain a lot if your dogs bother them on the Christmas night. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

Yes some dogs hate cats but some love cats. The idea u are currently following is good. My suggestion is keep ur dog in an isolated place for christmas so that he will not come in cantact with that cat. I had a og called diana, she hates cows and we live in suburbs and there are many cows grazing at night in front of my house. My dog barks when she sees cows and sometimes she even bites cows and chases them out. Well sometimes i find her bark disturbing because she will baek correctly when i sit to study. So waht i do is i put a cookie in her dog house and when she goes in i will lock her inside so thst see will not be able to see those cows grazing about. I also can study in peace. Well anyway i love my dog. Happy Mylotting

Hello maximax8; I know the trouble of barking dogs, at night. Mine does the same thing sometimes. I have to take her to an area that she will be more content and less distracted by the cause of the barking and have her calm down. Then i tell her to stay and be a good girl. I make sure that she has water, food and toys along with her favorite blanket. Sound like the dreams of the cat have come true but at what expense? perhaps you could talk to the woman who owns the cat and explain what is happening. Perhaps suggest that maybe she could keep her cat in at night. Easily enough, find another spot that is appropriate for your dogs to sleep at night, away from the window where they may easily be distracted by passers by, including the cat. If all else fails, why not let the cat inside and let the dogs and cat be together. The dogs may then stop barking. My dog barks at cats but if I let her down and roam, introducing herself to the cat, she stops barking. She simply just wants to play with the cat. Beware however if you allow the cat to be together with the dogs. My dog is quite small. Smaller than most cats and some cats like to hiss and swat. I don't want the cat to cut my dog with it's claws. This is something to be careful about when we allow our dogs to meet with cats that we are unfamiliar with. Hope that something here is of help.

I had a dog before but he seldom barked. Once he barked, it must be something wrong. Such as he found some suspicious people nearby. So I don't understand why some dogs can bark all the time. I wonder whether you dogs feel lonely or insecurity. In the past I read a book about dogs. Perhaps you can try to give a clock to your dogs. Then they can listen to the it and perhaps they won't feel so lonely any more. I hope it can help. I love China

What a shame your dogs are being naughty when you're doing the right thing and keeping them in at night! Hopefully the newspaper over the door will help - but they probably react to noises as well, and even a little sound out there might start them off. I hope they behaved themselves for you on Christmas Eve (which is probably over for you by now) - and if not, maybe your neighbour has enough Christmas spirit to forgive them!
