How do you get organized?

I am really hoping to be more organized this year. First problem, I don't have a plan. I would love to be able to organize things and just know where everything is at any point in time, but so far I haven't been able to do that. So does anyone know of a way to get organized? How do you maintain it?

Same question as the first poster. What are you trying to organize? Home, time etc. I have some ideas but need to know what you would like to organize.

Oh sorry about that. I am trying to organize my house. My daughter has so many toys I just don't know where to put them all. That and our closets are jammed packed full of things. I just can't seem to get my house organized. I mean it is clean, but there isn't an exact spot for things.

I've taken a couple of great classes on home cleaning organization and maintenance. Typically with the home, you take each room and list all of the tasks that you have to do in each room and then assign each task a daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, semi annual or yearly priority to it. Then you assign specific days/weeks/months to doing the tasks and you work from this master task list. Buy storage boxes and label them put away, find another place for, throw away, garage sale (nothing goes into this box unless you are having a garage sale within the next 3 months), donate. Work room by room and when you fill up a box dispose of it ie if it's in the put away box, put it away. Continue through your entire home. After I completed the entire house the first time, I kept the labeled boxes and as I go through my daily routine, I keep the boxes with me and when I'm done cleaning/straightening/uncluttering, I empty the boxes on a daily basis. It's a lot of work to begin with but ultimately well worth it. In terms of the closets, pull everything out that you don't wear or wear infrequently (like summer clothes now)and move those items into a separate closet &/or place those that can be folded into storage containers and store out of the way. Mend, repair, iron or launder everything that needs to be. Only items that can be worn in its' current state should be in your closet. What should go back into your closet are your favorite outfits, clothes that aren't favorites but that you wear frequently and clothes that you like that need something else to complete ie. Ag reat pair of slacks but you need a top to wear with them. Favorite outfits should be put back into the closet in a place that is easy to get to (I keep mine in the middle). Those that I like not so much but that I wear go on the right hand side of my closet and those without a match go on the left until I can find a match and reassign it to the middle or the right. Works for me. Try checking out the Fly Lady for more organizational tips. I would try the same method for toys. Use storage boxes for the toys that aren't favorites or aren't played with a lot and keep those things accessible that your child likes to play with. Sorry this is so long. Good luck.

i didnt get, what do you want to organise. if you want to organise your home, then if you have enough space, you can arrange the things.Say,keeping the books where you study, and keeping the clothes where you return after bath, and so on. If you want to organise your work, then the best way is to sketch out a schedule with proper intervals.

Sorry about that. Silly me..forgot to mention the whole problem. I am mainly focusing on my home. I just don't have an exact spot for everything. My house is clean, it's just not organized. I can never find things when I need them.

There are some great web sites about organizing your home. Many with printable check lists and planners. http://www.organizedhome.com is a very good one. Good luck on this venture.

The first step would be to take a pen & paper & write down all your priorities.( eg: which item you search for often, financial documents which you may require to browse this year etc) The second step is to act now( do not procastinate).Lots of files & transparent boxes of appropriate sizes will help. Smaller cabinets in the cupboards will be a useful addition to segregate things. GOLDEN RULE: Clear the clutter. "Anything you have not used in last one year, probably dose not deserve to to kept in your house". personally speaking, being disorganized is great fun, i hate utra organized fanatics. unplanned romance, unplanned home, unplanned vacations are always great fun.
