If I'm correct, a mule is when a male donkey and a mare (horse)come together and produce an offspring. When did this first happen, where did it first take place and who decided to cross breed them or is it a natural thing these two species do??? And how sad . . . the mule is sterile. Is there any other animal who cannot procreate?

I heard of mules in the Bible. Absalom the son of King David was riding a mule under a tree when his hair got caught, but I do not know how far back before then that mules were used. I suppose the first mule was an accident when a donkey and horse got together and they discovered the offspring was quite vigorous, and taller than the horse parent. So they started to breed mules. I suppose at the beginning, they were fertile, but after time, they became sterile since the horse and the donkey must have come from the original stock. I do not know if any other animal who is born sterile.
