Prs. Elect makes first totally incompetent decision.

So far the Cabinet of the Obama Administration has disappointed a bit, but also impressed me. It is very disappointing to see that Obama's adiminstration is a complete reversal of the entire "change" campaign Obama ran on. I know, I know, some of you will say that the "change" was just from the last 8 years, but Obama also used the Change campaign against Hillary, so that the whole "8 years" excuse doesn't wash. Naming retired Gen. Eric "Beret Blunder" Shinseki was pretty boneheaded (to use one of Obamas words). I mean, the guy seriously thought that changing the hat of the Army would improve morale! But as I said, he has also made some choices that impress me. Keeping Robert Gates as the Secretary of Defense should prove to be a great move, both politically and militarily. Politically because it goes a long way towards Obama's promise to appoint people "without regard to party or ideology". Militarily because Gates has more than proven himself in the position he holds. But Prs. Elect Obama has made a decision that is completely and entirely incompetent. So incompetent that it should be the Democrats leading the charge against it. Leone Panetta as Director of the CIA? Ever since Hurricane Katrina, Democrats have complained, lampooned, laughed, protested and been outraged about Michael Brown being the director of FEMA. The main complaint seemed to be that, while Brown had experience as an administrator, he had no experience in Emergency Management. The fact that FEMA only seemed to have botched 1 major disaster recovery mission during his 2 1/2 year tenure was apparently meaningless. What good is a track record when there is a meaningless witch hunt to appease? Please, can anyone who took part in the lynching of Brown defend this completely incompetent choice for CIA Director? He has no experience in intelligence, no experience in information and data gathering, no experience in intelligence disemination and the only experience he seems to have in Disinfomation is against the people of the US as part of the Clinton Administration. Most Cabinet and Agency Director positions require people with adminstration skills more than actual experience in the function of the agency or department. Most administrators can't actually do the work of the people who work for them, but that is ok because most never actually do the work anyway. They don't concern themselves with where the rubber meets the road as much as the road map and "big picture". They don't make the day to day decisions, they coordinate the assets and communicate with other agencies and departments to make sure things flow smoothly. The CIA is a different animal. The Director absolutely needs to understand everyone's position, from the Long Range Surveilance Teams and Spies on the ground to the analysts, linguists and researchers who take information and data and turn it into intelligence. They may not be able to do it all, but it is imperative that they know how it's done. They can't possibly do their job otherwise. Leone Panetta not only can't do this job, he has contempt for the entire intelligence community. Naming Leone Panetta as the CIA director makes LESS sense than naming Col. Sanders as the CEO of PETA. This isn't just another one of Obama's self described "Bonehead Moves", this is completely incompetent.

I heard his explanation but am still shaking my head in dismay. This is one of those where I find myself wondering. I like many of his choices and am glad that he is trying to reach across the aisle as well, especially with Gates. But this one is bizarre.

It wasn't an explanation, it was a pathetic excuse.

Actually, envoy to China during the time he was, he would have been a part of the intelligence community. Nothing in Panetta's background even comes close.

I would like to point out to you though that there have been several directors of the CIA who don't come form the Intelligence community. Many have done very good jobs. Most notable among them in recent years: George Bush Sr.

Ever think he dont' want anyone in there that knows what they doing. You mention a complete change from what has ben it appears to me we are going back to the Clinton adminstration, where everything that Hillary stood for was wrong, but once he got the election over he starts appointing the same people Bill Clinton had. I thought we was in for a real change, new peole, new ideas. And another thing I am from the New Orleans area, in fact 70 miles south of New Orleans, I am so sick of hearing that someone botched the job in New Orleans. Did you know that Hurricane Katrina was not what brought the water into New Orleans, but a barge that was nto tied securely, and it broke loose and kept hitting the wall till it knocked part of it out and in came all the water. Now please explain how Brown, Bush or anyone else could of known that was going to happen. There wa what 12 feet of water in the street or more. What was they going to do? What could tey do? If you want to blame anyone blame the Governor and the mayor who refused to work together and help the people. AMTRK offered the train to take people out he refused it, was that Bush or Browns fault. I'm sorry I don't like this new man we got for President, and it has nothing to do with his skin color as I see it he is not only black, but white also. But I thik h talks out of both sides of his mouth, and I'm waiting for this big change that he is going to bring around. I am also sick of the middle class, there are others here that are not middle class, he should work to better everyone not just the middle class. When he does something for us let me know please. MY queston to you now is does he cabinet not consist of Clinton people and how is that change or did he mean go back in stead of forward.

That's some interesting information about Katrina. I'm going to have to look into that. I still think that the bulk of the incompetence in preparing for Katrina involved local politicians whose job it is to directly oversee the state and local affairs. Bush has a whole freaking country to deal with. Either way, bashing Bush is more trendy than bashing Louisiana politicians.

can't seem to stop shaking my head. leone, should have declined the position, knowing his limitations. is it just a list of positions to be filled and drawing names out of a hat? well, I won't get into it other than to say "I do think there are conspiracies going on, and perhaps that is the only way to explain some actions"

Thanks for ehoing the sentiments I expressed in my thread on the matter. You articulated it much better than I did. I equated this with appointing Donald Trump as Secretary of Defense. This is rediculous beyond rediculous. It is obsurdity at it's finest. It is almost sureal in an alice in wonderland sort of way. Some speculate it wasn't an accident. thoughts range from Clinton had something on Obama and tried to ensure many of his old cronies an appointment. Others say maybe Obama just wanted a rubber stamping yes man who didn't know what he was doing. Either way, its iresponsable on an epic scale.

Simple, really. The Clintons wanted their buddy Leon in on the cabinet, and Obama gave it to him. I think there's a lot of backdoor stuff that goes on during this time when a new president is putting his cabinet together. Also I think Obama wanted to please Code Pink and other leftist groups and say, "See? I gave you somebody soft that won't torture prisoners. Aren't I nice?"
