Salty Grandpa Bob

Jean legs - The salt absorbed through the material from sitting on my floor mats of the car.

Well, I've got to love the snow and cold where I live as it gets really bad at times. This photo is an example of some of the pitfalls of living in a cold area that gets lots of snow. They use salt to de-ice the roads etc before during and after a snow storm. This is what happens to my jeans when I wear the long legged ones. The bottom of the leg lies against my floor mats of my car and they suck up the moisture which contains a lot of salt. You can see the white line on the bottom of the legs, this is the salt absorded by the denim material. If this isn't cleaned quickly the salt eats through the denim eroding the material etc etc. Do you have to deal with salt on your roads and all the pitfalls that come with it? Ewwwww! That looks gross! Plus I didn't even know it can ruin the material, really? Uh oh cos I left it in my jeans before. I hope nothing happens to them. Yea they have salt everywhere cos it's snowing out now where I'm at...how I wish I was living in Argentina or Australia now....awwww I bet it's nice and warm there . I guess next time I'm going to have to wash them promptly, right? Have a nice day. Pablo

Salt eats away at the material like it does on most things if left to sit and not wiped/washed away. At least wipe them down a little. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I know what you mean. We have not had to deal with salt or brine this year yet. I hate what the salt does to your car if you do not get it off of there in time. It will eath through the paint and clearcoat.

Having those lovely salt marks on the bottom of jeans or even on shoes happens even here...not only is salt spread on the streets where I live but they sprinkle it on the sidewalks....so you go walking in mushy snow with the salt and viola...nice white salt marks...so far for some reason my shoes haven't been affected though which I'm glad..paid a nice price for them and wouldn't want them to get ruined...Hey..you're up late aren't you....I'm about to shut off here...been trying to catch up on replying to my discussions (Makes a mental note to herself, not to start so many discussions ....I can't keep up...heellllpppp)

The city I live in does not do the general sidewalks actually. They do the larger public opnes but not private residences. So we as homeowners are responsible for this. That is why I use the salt on my own homes areas. This salt crusted jean leg gets really hard as it dries also. Kind of sucks but it's part of winter life I reckon. My tennis shoes get white encrusted often. I wash them off right away with a wet rag though to keep them from getting ruined. The jeans usually get washed each day when this happens. Hi Bob, Hope you had a Merry Christmas and are having a great New Year. Sorry it has been so long, having DSL issues. Now as for your discussion...Bob we are still wearing shorts here in NC. I want some snow so bad. What they do here if and when we get any ice, (which is mainly what we get), or snow, is put a dirt salt mixture on the roads, but mainly on the bridges. We haven't had a good snow here in years, and it has probably been 3 or 4 years since we had a bad ice storm. When I was a kid we used to get a couple of good snows every year, I guess it is the ozone, who knows? Send me some snow, PLEASE!

No problem. I have had one small glitch wince getting my DSL. I had to reset my ISP settings and that was fast and easy and did the trick. They use sand as well but more salt. Depends on the type of weather occuring and also the time of year. Once the salt supply slims down they start using a mix. The budget allows for only a certain amount of salt purchased by the city, county, state etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yes thsat sonds cold. I have never liven in a place where it snowed. I have heard of them salting the streets. My Mom was born in upstate New York but left when she was very little. I have no idea of how to drive in the snow. My hats off to you, you must love it!!

They also use sand on the roads. Somedays the roads and the sides of them get very nasty looking from this. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I no longer have to deal with salt on the roads. Not any pitfalls that come with having salt on the road ways. I moved to Florida where it does not snow. Which is a good thing because they don't sell salt down here. If it ever snows we would be in a world of hurt. Its funny, when I have kids ask me what my ice scrapper is. I have two really long ones because I have a van.

yes of course I do, and we have to buy boat protector here to keep the salt from ruining our boots, well some people don't but there boots don't last more than a season if they do put the protector on, it also seals them from water getting into them which happens a lot too.

Hi Grandpa B, This is my first whole period of winter here but we only experienced to have snow once! But, when I got here last Feb. It happened to me...I am not used to it so I am the type of person who will be trying to remove it in my jeans once in awhile even if I am walking! LOL!

The only time we have to deal with salt being put on the roads (mainly the bridges and over passes) is when it is going to freeze. Other than that we deal with salty air most days and if you go to the beach it is really bad with the salty air, sand and water. Gotta make sure your car is washed and cleaned really good even up under the car so it don't rust.

We don't have any problems down here - but when I was a child and we lived in Darwin (up north) a block from the beach, the louvres of the house were always encrusted with salt. Didn't matter how much you cleaned them - they'd be salty again within a few days! Cars used to rust out, too. I think the duco is better these days, but there used to be lots of rusty cars in coastal areas!

Hi GRADPA BOB, Yes that has happened to my jeans in the past when I was working and I normally walk, so after walking in salt and grit in the raod, my jeans at the bottom of the legs will get white marks and then they start to shred, I have a few jeans like that. Tamara

So I guess I have that to look forward to now that I have moved back up north. It will probably be worse since my daughters truck leaks and the floorboard stays wet. Just the other day my jeans siphoned water clear up to my knees.

Yes! I hate salt. It is all over my car and it really dirty looking. I guess it could not be good for the paint work on it either. I have to get the car washed often at the moment, as it is white outside with ice and the roads are heavily gritted with it. My floors and windows are all dirty with it to, as it is splashed everywhere. I really hate this stuff and thank goodness it is to rain and get warmer here at the weekend as it will help wash the salt all away. Hope your jeans are not ruined. It really seems to stain the shoes as well and I am wearing all my old ones at the moment. I guess though if they did not salt the roads and footpaths, there where would be many of us stranded indoors. I really wish the Spring would come early, as I hate wintertime and all the frost and snow.

I'm so glad I live BELOW the snow line. I don't have to deal with all of that lovely stuff. I bet that salt makes doing laundry all sorts of fun doesn't it? LOL

Right now you almost have to wash the car every other day too....one day it's freezing then it melts and your car is full of the white stuff....it's also hard to get off floors and leaves a white mess by the back door. I know we need it......and for me it's probably better then where they use the beet juice mixed in with the salt!

Well, I live in a small town where they don't put anything down on the roads. We are lucky if they grade them with a tractor. We don't normally get a whole lot of snow, but we do get a few inches here and there and it does make it hard to get around when they don't clean the streets.

Living in the country you don't see alot of salt on the roads. They use a really fine gravel, although this year we have been introduced to the lovely "grit" which is a mixture of..well...grit! LOL Everytime they put that stuff ( it does have a bit of salt in it) on the road I just wait for the weather to break enough to run to the car wash! LOL
