Okay I live oin Minnesota and get a lot of snow which entails the melting of this as well from sunshine etc. This melting causes ice to form. Then I have to use some type of ice melting product to protect myslef, my family, and visitors from slipping and falling on the ice. I hate using it as it is costly, but one needs to be sure their family and guests are safe when the walk on my steps and drive etc. I just hate thew fract the salt gets dragged into the house on the soles of shoes/boots etc. What do you do to be sure your family and guests are safe of you have icy steps etc? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

the first year I moved into this place, I fell down the stairs, because of ice when I was putting the garbage out, it was a good thing I only have three stairs!, I don't put any salt but my boyfriend does at his place.

I have just a couple stairs as well. But when icy they are very dangerous. So I salt them, but only if icy not just for snow on them. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I am glad it was not a bad fall. I have not fallen in a long time. I know as we get older we need to be careful not to fall.

Salt is nasty stuff on concret, The thing that works great and is cheap is kitty liter. Ice melt is good stuff but as you said pricey.

I don't use it a lot actually. I sweep it off after it melts the ice so it doesn't sit on the pavement too long. I've tried litter and it makes more of a mess than melting the ice. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I can understand what you are saying and I don't blame you about the salt. That ice is very dangerous and what is bad is it can be there and you not even see it until someone falls down. When we do get ice, which is hardly ever, we don't have to worry about steps like you do.

Yeah most the times the ice is hidden by a layer of thin snow. So I have slipped many times not seeing it in advance. Ugghhhh! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I salt my walk and steps, too. I don't want to get sued! About the only one that visits my house is the mailman and I take care to be sure he doesn't fall and hurt himself. The dogs and I use the back door and having company is very rare for me so the salt doesn't really present a problem in my house. If it did, I think I would have to have a rug or something just inside the front door.

I have my kids and grandkids visiting often. Plus the helath aide for dad once a week as well. Don't need or want anyone slipping/falling due to my negligence. It doesn't affect Busters paws as I sweep it away soon after the ice melts. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

"What do you do to be sure your family and guests are safe of you have icy steps etc?" I have a good answer for your question. I moved to an area that does not snow. So, I no longer have to worry about the dangers of ice or snow.

We make sure to keep it shoveled off. We also use salt on the snow and ice to melt it in the areas in which we will be walking on. I am in southern Indiana and we have not gotten any snow here this year. It is weird. We got a few flurries so far and that is it.

I sweep it off or shovel it off after it melts the ice etc. I hate it being tracked indoors all over my carpet etc. I got a couple more inches due Friday here again. I love the snow and cold actually. To a popint that is. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Well actually I don't do anything, if the steps are icy, they're just icy, when the weather is like that, I don't go out anyway, I stay in the house all day, and its only my husband and I here, so we don't worry about anyone else coming over, when we're having weather like that nobody goes anywhere, they all stay home...lol.

We so rarely get ice/snow that it's not really worth it to keep any de-icing products in the house. If there is ice, nobody comes anyway. Heck, they shut down the schools and get bread, eggs and stuff at the mere hint of snow, lol. I usually clean off the walkway just enough. Often ice/snow doesn't stick around long anyway. This is KY. We think it's funny because we haven't always lived here and are used to very wintry conditions;)

Hey Grandpa Bob! Well, I'm not the one who has to take care of the steps and the walkways where I live. It is my landlord's responsibility and they don't do such a great job at all! I swear they are waiting for people to fall and sue their azzs! I have two sets of steps right outside my apartment and they are always covered with ice! There are sometimes when I can't even take the garbage out to the cans for fear that I will break my neck so I just toss the garbage onto the cans! They sometimes leave a large can of sand at the corner. I think they are hoping that we just do it ourselves!

We have salt boxes on the street corners here, but the one where I live has vanished. Yes! vanished. I slipped down my steps at the front of my house just before Christmas. I was fine but it could of been worse. I went out later on and used household salt from my food cupboard. It worked but I ran out of it. I think the council where I live needs to get that 'grit box' back. That is what we call salt here "Grit" We call the lorries that scatter it "gritters" strange words but then we are Irish. Those crystals look too nice to throw down. I guess though they are good for your steps and garden. We get them free here if you can find a grit box.

Ice on paths and driveways is a real pain ,we never get it too bad in our part of England but on the news we see other parts of our country and Scotland get it bad .We normally put salt down where we are on icy paths and drives but sand is supposed to be better but no one sells it around here,so we have to use what we have got.The authorities salt the main roads only but not the pavements sometimes we are lucky and if its windy the salt may land on the pavements,we tend to walk in the roads but that is dangerous for obvious reasons. The hospitals have been run off their feet with people slipping on the pavements and breaking bones ,it is particularily hard on the old, youngsters bounce but if the old slip it is devasting for them ,so why don't they salt the pavements it would be cheaper in the long run ,save all those hospitials visits as they get treated free with the health service no matter who they are.
