My Uncle is an active conversationalist and the below words are written by them.
Ultimately, it has been confirmed and accepted the fact that tiger population in our forests by government, I find an urge to contribute something towards the saving of wild life before it is too late. The following ideas, implementations and conservation schemes have been gathered right through my visits to various parks, tiger reserves and sanctuaries in India. I consulted many conservationists, one time hunters and poachers as to what is the best possibility of saving our wild life.
The quick and increasingly rapid way our wild life is being destructed is a measure issue to be solved. Past
few years, I have been associating with people and discussing measure issues for conservation. Gradually over the period I was filled with realisation that the situation is rapidly deteriorating to the point of no recovery. I realised that the planning done by the authorities for the preservation of wild life is in the air not much of it reaches the ground for implementation. To me the compilation of ideas are merely collection of ‘words’ and hardly of any use to save our wildlife
To few of us these days have an active interest in wild life. I do not suggest that everyone should become a observer, recorder or photographer overnight. It is the need for a hobby for those obliged to lead lonely lives in close touch with nature. I would say, it is even a recreation for the city dwellers, and an opportunity to study of wildlife. The knowledge thus gained will help rapidly vanishing assets of our forests to retain its glory and not allowed to shrink to insignificance. It is necessary that citizens in general and concerned forest officers should have a true understanding of role and some knowledge of the features.
As said in my past posts, I would like you wild lifers of these communities to cheap in with ideas that will help not only to save but preserve our wild life.
My discussions with every possible wild life enthusiasts all over India made me understand that our wild life had passed through different phases while its association with man. The first was mythological. Every one knows how wildlife had insignificant role in our mythological stories. Later second phase during invasion of moguls and others, the exploitations of wild life was set on. It continued with increasing intensity and with different emphasis as our population increased. More land was needed for cultivation and it was forcefully cleared with wild life had no where to go but get killed in process. In recent times we witnessed maximum development and expansion of man’s needs at the expenses of wild life. Independence brought more plights to our wildlife. Ever increasing population and repatriation of people brought forest under heavy destruction. It left wildlife homeless and had to take shelter in which ever way and survive on available source. This brought conflict between man and wildlife and even now we hear cases of farms being destructed and people being attacked. In process, valuable wild life was being hunt down for various unbelievable reasons.
British came in to rule India and killing spree increased no bound. In addition to it, Maharajas and other small state owner brought more pressure on wild life.
To protect crop people were issues guns license. Misused of such license under the pretext of protecting crop was in increase. The inevitable result has been the development of a new type of sportsman. Such sportsman had new sets values. It obviously had profound influence on wild life.
A major clash between wild life and human was on appearance over use of land. The cultivator was merely given right to protect his crops and just live stocks from depredation and the government was normally not prepared to assume responsibility for the wild life that does the damage. With such attitude, crop protected gun holder and hunters flourished. There was by no means one could differentiate between crop protector and real hunter. It was not until recent time such practice of issuing license was abolished. By then the toll of killing spree of wild life had no bound.
Animal life depends directly or indirectly on plant life for its continued existence and a study of the dependence involves a study of botany, zoology and animal ecology. Wildlife management is also concerned with laws and their enforcement.
It is said that ‘environmental manipulation‘ is a must for dynamic wildlife management. It has it own belief when one uses the word ‘environmental manipulation. The belief is that to create favourable conditions for wild life by artificial operation of a nature. How is this achieved? This requires adequate knowledge and research of manipulation.
Wildlife plays much bigger role in our culture, recreation and economy and certain activities. On the other hand they are destructive to our property. Wild life has peculiar charm and we enjoy them even though they may appear frightening by the study of its habits, movements and interrelationship with other wild creatures. I am sure many of you will agree with me for getting thrill and satisfaction when you find and realise that either wildlife or birds that you look for exist in your area of residence as in actually finding them rather searching for them in different areas.
Now the money generated through direct or indirect sale of wild life products is of much concerned now days. The benefit derived very from species to species. For example a monkey sold for medical research as in direct sale to the actual market value of a tiger, elephant or rhinoceros and birds sold in indirect way. Even the hide, horns, musk-pods of musk deer and various parts of animals brings in huge amount in indirect market. Wild animals play a major useful role by migrating such as in Kenya and Tanzania. Even the avian fauna such as harriers, flamingoes, buntings, ducks, various types of cranes and few other with their greater range and mobility act as distributors of plant species. In south India, it is found that birds spread ‘sandal wood tree’ by consuming seeds and spread them through their droppings. The
Triphala’ (Ayurvedic medicinal plant) is spread by deer. The flowers of ‘Semal’ (silk cotton) tree for their nectar are attractive to many species of birds. They are sort of agent in cross-pollination. At the same time it must be admitted that few pest plants like lantana and loranthus are spread by birds.
Wild animals, insects and birds act as scavengers and help in keeping the countryside, towns and forests clean and healthy. Many of you have noticed the common kite, vultures and crow such birds and also jackal and hyena like wild animals are scavengers of nature. Human can not can not do the revolting work such scavengers by any means.
Many may feel hyenas are cruel of the lot wild life when they attack weakest animal. Few people who kind at heart do find them such. But one has to accept the fact that the nature has allotted them work of keeping nature clean by killing weakest. Thus I call them as ‘natural regulator’ in wild animal life.
