Candles and Candle Holders Tip

I can not recall where I learned this little trick about candles in glass holders/hurricanes etc. But I wanted to share it here for others that may burn candles and not know this neat trick. We know the wax tends to build up a bit in the bottoms of hurricane jars and holders of other sizes etc. It can be a bear cleaning the wax out of those holders for the next candle to be burnt. Well here's the tip, in the clean holder add just a small amount of water covering the bottom of the holder. Add the candle being sure there's about a 1/16th of an inch of water or so with the candle in it. Now when the candle burns and the was drips into the holder, the wax hardens making an open area under the remaining wax/candle. Once it is burnt out totally the small amount of wax/candle pulls out or falls out easily with a very minute amount of wax left in the holder. Sometimes a fork jammed into the small wax will help pull it free. But it is a lot easier and quicker than having to clean a lot of wax from the holders. In this photo you can see the water in the holder as well as the wax formed just at the water line making it easy to remove. Just wanted to share this here.

That is a great idea, never heard about doing that. I normally get candles though and when they are burned down jar and all goes in the trash.
I am sure by now you know the picture didn't show up that you attached so I won't say anything. hahahaha

Seems there are always more glitches on myLot on the weekends.
I burn so many I save some of the jars.
I use the large jars for pillar candles.
I buy most my candles at the Dollar Store as well.
I am looking for a few decent votive candle holders now.
I burn a LOT daily.

Thanks for sharing, I love candles and I burn them often. I have never heard of this tip and it is a great one. I am going to pass it on my family members we all like candles and even have a candle maker in the family. I even got candles for Christmas.

I wet my fingetips then pinch the flame out. That stopes the smokiness of putting them out. If you do it make sure your fingers are wet all over so as not to burn yourself though.

They also have "candle snuffers".
They are usually brass with a semi long handle.
An open end that sits over the flame then it snuffs the flame out.

Wow, thanks for that! I hate trying to clean the wax out of a candle holder and I've broken a few of them in the attempt.

That's pretty clever! But I don't really see why people burn candles anyway. Other than for the scent I mean. And I can get tired of a lot of scents. They are very pretty though. I don't have a very good sense of smell, I think, though. Sometimes I just like to hear and smell nothing so I can just sit and think and not be distracted by anything.

me reaons, ambiance, romatic settings, to rid the area of smoke, for the scents. Many reasons. I burn them for the ambiance especioally at night with the lights off. So rustic looking actually. I also smoke so a candle burning helps to burn away the smoke as well. I burn candles while listening to a CD of storms and or water crashing on a shore. Talk about a peaceful and serene setting.

I'll have to give this on a try. You can also stick the hurricane/holder in the freezer for a few minutes and the excess wax will pop right out. The only thing about this trick is if the top of the holder is smaller than the bottom then you have to break up the wax while it is frozen in order for it to fit through the top which is not an easy ask. But if it is the same size or lrger than th bottom it will pop out easily.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. Too much work for me.
I use to just use a hot knife to edge the wax free.
But since learning this water trick it is so much easier now.

Well Grandpa Bob, that is a good tip, I'll try it next time. I know I've heard that somewhere else too, but couldn't quite remember how to do it, I think I heard it from Martha Stewart. I hate having all that candle wax stuck to the glass, it makes it hard to reuse it sometimes...Thanks..

Hey grandpa Bob! That sounds like a really great tip! I have
alot of candles that are in glass jars that I would like to
use again after I am finished buring the candles in them!
The are really nice decanter jars that I can use for
displaying things in and it will help when I am ready to clean
the rest of the wax out of the bottom of them! Now if only I
could find a way to get the labels off the easier! I know that
I will have to soak them in hot water for a very long time and
hope that they will be easy to peal off!

Thanks for the tip. You have be careful that you do not add water to the candles that melt all the way every time you burn them. Partylite and some other candles are made of mostly oil and when burned they turn back to oil so that way they burn totally with no waste. These candles seem expensive but really they are not because the only thing left when the candle is gone is the little metal tip that held the wick.

Thanks for the tip. I usually put them in the freezer for a while, but they're still hard to get clean. I don't burn candles a lot and usually buy the ones in jars as I'm more comfortable with the safety of those, but you just can't always get the scent you want in a jar candle. I like to burn them when I'm feeling down. The candle seems to clear the air of negative energy as well as odors.

Great Tip there Grandpa Bob; I'll have to try that one, sometimes in the past I'd
get so frustrated at trying to get the darn wax out I'd just wind up throwing the
stupid candle holder glass out!!! Now that's frustration!! LOL!!
