I have seen doctors prescribing vitamin capsules or tablets to patients of most ailments. Even people buy them over counter & consume them ,thinking that they will keep them healthy for life. I am not sure, but I read an article today that vitamins are helpful only when they are deficient in our body, that is only in the avitaminosis conditions. And an healthy indivisual with normal diet is generally having his daily dose of vitamins from the food in sufficient amount. So there should be no need of extra supplementation. What is your view on this topic. DOn't you think vitamins are unnecessarily overused these days by people ? Do they really help to the extent they are expected to do ??

Once, my doctor told me, "If you take vitamins you don't need, in the best case your pee will be really expensive -considering how much do those pills cost-. In the worst case, you can poison yourself". He said some vitamins can actually be bad in big dosis, so only a doctor should prescrive them -and yes, some of them are way too better in natural food. :)

I do think that vitamins have become rather trendy lately and that people have been taking too many and taking them for the wrong reasons. Supplements are very useful and can be an important part of therapy for certain illnesses and ailments but for the average person a good multi vitamin to fill in the blanks is really all you need. The reality is that most people don't get enough through nutrition alone but by taking 10 different supplements a day you aren't necessarily going to make up for it. Plus if you take too much of certain supplements you can actually get too much of something or your body will only absorb so much and then it can have an ill effect on your health.

I try to remember to take vitamins. Mainly because i am a picky eater. I don't eat the way i should. I also give me son vitamins for two reasons. He is also a picky eater and has been since he started eating. I try to encourage his eating habits by eating good in front of him but it doesn't make a difference. He also is small for his age and is constantly sick. Vitamins are said to help a child get sick less and helps them recover faster when they do get sick.
