Air Canon

For chemistry my friend and I created a Calcium Carbide canon. We thought to build an air pressured one so we can use it at home. We plan on having the barrel to be 2" in diameter and 2'3" in length. We were looking at a 2" valve for quick release. The problem is, we tried some and they are so hard to open and close, by the time its fully open, all the air would have escaped and there will not be enough pressure to fire a projectile. Is there a way we can get the valve to open easier? Is there a different way for a valve? Thanks! I a working on a 3D scale model and will upload pictures later. We hope to have the project complete soon, so pictures and updates (and prolly questions) will be also posted soon! Thanks!
