India Ink and pen nibs

In my high school art class we did some really awesome and fun projects and one of them was pen and ink drawings with pen nibs and India ink. And mine turned out really great! But that was 12 years ago. Recently I was looking through the art supplies at Hobby Lobby and happened upon the ink and pens so, remembering how much fun they were to use, I bought a holder, a couple of nibs and a bottle of ink. But I can't make it work! I keep globbing ink all over my paper. I must be missing a step in the process but I don't remember what. I tried blotting the tip on another piece of paper but then I end up without any to draw with....
I considered buying the pens that have the ink already in them. They are filled with real India ink and the kit comes with six different pens of different weights...to make fine lines through thick lines. But I don't know if those produce the same kinds of results as the "fountain" style pen nibs...
Experiences? Suggestions?
