My back neighbor has two ferrets and she just adores them. They are apparently wonderful pets... although I'm really squeamish about anything "rodent-y" so I wouldn't be able to own one myself. LOL I've been doing some research and found that ferrets need higher levels of digestible protein than either dogs or cats. They should also be fed pellet food because it helps with teeth cleaning. You can actually buy ferret food but, evidently, Eukanuba brand kitten formula is the closest you can get in cat food. Also, don't use water bottles on the side of a cage for a ferret. They need open source water so it should be in a bowl. Ferrets are very busy and playful and I found many recommendations for homemade toys. Cat toys are also excellent for ferrets. You might try tin cans that are well cleaned and have no sharp edges, plastic jugs with large holes cut in them so they can get in and hide, a good strong towel or piece of fabric because they love to play tug of war, etc. If you have the room, they are really active and would enjoy a sort of "jungle gym" to play in too. Just avoid rubber toys, though, so that they don't chew off pieces and possibly suffer intestinal blockage. A good rule of thumb for ferret playthings is "anything they can crawl in, under or through". Enjoy your new pet! :)
