Giving The Dog A Bone

Well the little Princess had a visitor the other day.
My neighbor caught me as we were coming home, saying that she was making pea soup and held up a piece of a ham bone.
She said that she wanted to give it to me for my dog.
My first reaction was that I don't feed my dog red meat because I don't but Bless her heart.
She nearly fell over when I told her that I didn't think that she would eat it.
She continues that every dog needs a bone.
I agreed but..
Long story short is that she insisted on giving my dog this ham bone.
I complied and she went ahead to put the bone inside, on the floor.
Roxy sniffed it and continued about her routine when she gets home from being out all day.
As we said thank you and good bye, the lady said to Roxy that she is surprised that she didn't go crazy for her bone.
At one point, I went into the room where the bone was and I seen that it has moved about two feet.
Well we left the bone there on the floor until late the next morning.
My dog didn't take to the bone much at all.
It didn't look chewed on in the least, so by that afternoon, I discarded it.
My question is this:
Do you have a dog that couldn't care a less for a bone or not?
It seems my Roxy would rather chew on her toys or a good stick [with supervision].
Truth is, I don't think that she has ever had a bone before.
She really didn't care for it.
For a dog, I am not sure if that is normal.
Mind you her mouth is quite small and that bone was about the size of her head.
What are your thoughts about my dog and her lack of interest in her bone?
How do your dogs react to bones?
Do you have a dog or know of a dog that doesn't eat a good ham bone?

My husbands dog chews on everything. She loves the rawhide bones from walmart and carries them around the house. If she is acting up we just say want your bone bone and she comes running. We cant buy her toys because everytime we do she ends up eating them. We bought her one of those rope toys and she ate all the rope. She does the same thing with squeaky toys just destroys them and eats them. We find that a rawhide bone is the best thing to please her and its ok for her to eat them.

Funny dog. My brothers dog shreds everything too. Especially toys. He loves sticks but neither last very long. Raw Hide Bones can actually last him for a day. Bigger ones can last for a few days.
Thank you for your response.

Thank you for this valuable warning.
Luckily my Yorkie doesn't go for raw hide bones either.
I will let my brother know for his Jack Russel,
Thank you for your comment.

My crazy dog will eat anything, but we do try to keep her on a good dry dog food.. She turns her nose up at it until she gets hungry enough to get a bite or two of it..
She has the greatest ability and it is to stand on her hind legs with her paws in front of her and beg for as long as she needs to in order to get a bite of our table food.. I believe her butt is completely flat and she never wavers nor falls, she assumes the begging position and stays that way until the last dish is taken to the kitchen and she knows that all hope is lost, she either scored a bote of two or she didn't.. One way or the other, we do know that she will be back the next time a meal is served, she could be a professional beggar..
She will eat carrots, grapes, broccoli, peas, beans, she has even eaten lettuce, but meat of any kind is her downfall.. It is no wonder we call her "Miss Piggy", even though her real name is Baby.. So you can just wrap up the bone and send it care of Baby Lawson, she will be watching the mail box for it..

Hi Donna, thank you for this response. Very funny and imagine that! What a clever little dog. I'd say she could probably be a very good circus dog as well, well, with a balancing act such as hers. Very Good Baby!
Good Girl!
Sounds like Baby has similar tastes to Roxy Who also loves nuts of almost any kind. She'll eat 'em. She likes lettuce too. Especially the center part of a romaine lettuce leaf. Roxy like cauliflower too. Even porrage!!
Next time I come into a big juicy dog bone it will expidite it by AirMail to Baby Lawson, from Roxy Raphael.
May she be looking to the starts in waiting for the silver stork!
Thanks again for a great response.

Lol, Hi Aussies2007;
Honestly, I often assume that she thinks that she is a cat!
She is not a rabbit but does love carrots.
We eat them as a snack, raw, every night.
I figured that cats love bones.
Much safer for the cats, to eat bones which dogs shouldn't.
Thank you for the picture and for your response.

Beautifully done barehugs! I haven't heard that in years.
I love it.
When I wrote the title to this discussion, it reminded me of the rock tune, Givin the Dog a Bone
I think it is by ACDC.
Anyway thank you for your fun response!

Hi EvrWonder, I think that your dog is perfectly normal, she hasn't been given bones before and don't really care for it. I don't have a dog anymore but have in the past and know for a fact that they don't all care for bones. I have two cats and you wouldn't believe the number of people who think they should love table scraps. When I tell them they won't eat it, they often have to prove it for themselves. Blessings.

Hi Pose123, Thank you for the confidence that my little dog is perfectly normal.
I figured so.
So, she doesn't like bones.
Suits me fine.
Thank you kindly for your response.

I have never seen a dog that didn't take at least a little interest in a bone. The smell usually attracts them to it even if they don't know what it is. Some do lose interest fairly quickly, though. We recently adopted a puppy from the Humane Society. She goes nuts over anything that seems even remotely edible to her.. Thankfully, she has been really good about chewing only on things that we allow her to - she has left the furniture and shoes alone.
I have had several dogs in my lifetime and each dog certainly had a different set of quirks, so what is 'normal' for one is not so normal for another. One dog, Baron - a German Shepherd Dog, wouldn't eat peas. We would give him a bowl of beef stew with peas in it. He would lick the peas clean but leave them sitting in the bottom of the bowl.
I wouldn't worry about Roxy's lack of interest in the bone.

Thank you for your response.
That is funny about the peas.
The can sure be particular hey?
I have seen Roxy do similar.
She is really good not to chew on anything other than her toys.
No cords, shoes, furniture but
if a piece of paper is around, she will shred it, to tiny pieces.
So important papers can not be left on the coffee table or else.
I thought that most dogs like bones too.
Frankly, I think it was a bit too big for her.
She did sniff it and she obviously did something with it because it had been moved.
That is were it sat so into the garbage it went.
Thanks again. I appreciate your response.

My dog loves bones but we have to be careful as to what kind we give him. He will choke on them or get them stuck in his throat. We mainly just give him chew bones. I don't know of any dogs that do not like bones.

Well, meet Roxy.
She doesn't go for the raw hide bones either.
She does like her small cylinder chew toy though.
Strange.
I am glad that you are careful which bones that you give to your dog.
He sure is a cute furry little thing.
A Pom dog?
Thank you for your response!
