Billy Powell, 56, original keyboardist for the Southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd died Tuesday night of a possible heart attack. The original band came together in 1973. Several members of the band died in a plane crash in 1977 including the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Ronnie's brother Johnny reformed the band in 1987 with the surviving members of the original group. Free Bird & Sweet Home Alabama were their two most notable songs. In my opinion, Lynyrd Skynyrd & Marshall Tucker were the two GREATEST Southern Rock bands of ALL time!!! Please tell me your memories of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

These things always happen in 3s. When one goes, it makes me wonder who will be next!!!

I wasn't really into music until I was in my forties, in 2000. Lynyrnd Skynrd became a huge part of my life then, merging southern music with rock and blues. That band has been through a lot of changes, tragic. Yes, it's probably the best southern rock band of all time. But that band pales beside Pink Floyd, my favorite band of all time that encompasses blues, rock, metal and punk.

I thought/think that Lynard Skynard were wonderful too LadyM. The thing that surprises me is that Billy Powell was only 56. I always thought that they were much older than that. They have quite a following over here although we have managed a few moderately well know bands ourselves. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath all spring to mind. I think that they are heard of in the US as well. LOL. Very sad when we see our heroes start to shuffle off this mortal coil isn't it?

I admired the bands you mentioned also. I noticed you skipped The Beatles & Rolling Stones. I was somewhat amazed that Billy was only 56 also. I could have sworn they were ALL older than me!!!
The thing that distinguished Lynyrd Skynyrd from the bands you mentioned was the fact that their sound was Southern Rock. Being a true Southern Belle, they hold a warm spot in my lil ol heart!!!

I do not have a lot of special memories but I liked their music a lot and was sad when the plane crashed.
It just teaches us to live life to the fullest each day try to have no regrets.
I can only imagine the music in Heaven with all the great musicians and singers over there!
