Uinted Nations looking to cencors speech

United States

The Organization of the Islamic Conference, an intergovernmental group of 57 states dedicated to protecting Muslim interests, is pushing hard for the idea. The OIC and the Arab League also have approached the United Nations to obtain a resolution that would protect religious entities from materials offensive to them by threatening sanctions on publishers. Lou Dobbs did a show on this last night. Basically the United Nations is going to put forth a resolution that would cencor not only what newpapers print, but what could be said about religions. If a person, tv media or newpaper writes or says something that offends a religious group than they would be punishable by law. Of course this goes against everything this country was founded on. We have the right to free speech. But not if the United Nations and the OIC have their way. http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2006-03-05-faith-edit_x.htm Do you think the UNited Nations will push this resolutions? Will Obama listen? Is it constitutional to even consider it? Tell me what you think.

"If a person, tv media or newpaper writes or says something that offends a religious group than they would be punishable by law" Punishable by LAW? Who's law? Just how do they think they are going to enforce this law ? Can we expect a U.N. police force? Do they honestly think the United States is going to change the constitution to suit their law ? Pshh....UN, censor THIS ! (ok, so you can't see it but I drew a picture of the u.n. flag on my asss and I am "saluting" them

Well courts seem to be willing to allow a class action suit against a 15 year old for making a goofy face deemed offensive, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were already willing to allow lawsuits for things offensive to muslims. Still, there's no way in he1l they'd ever be able to prosecute criminally for it in this country.

"Thanks for the great visual X" lol, no problem. (|) If by some whacked quirk or shift in the time/space fabric, this gets adopted, I will go out of my way to offend as many people as I can, up to and including, mailing such offensive writings, cartoons, charicatures, music, etc directly to the U.N. Secretary general.

I think the UN will probably pass it. It is certainly against our Constitution. I think we need to move away from the UN, the World Court etc.

I agree. We do need to move away from them.

Hello Lilwonders, To this specific article: "anti-blasphemy laws are in place in numerous countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. They are often enforced under the Aegis of sharia,..." Anti-blasphemy laws huh? Geesh, it'd be a bit of a challenge to morph such laws into our U.S. Constitution, wouldn't it? Do I think that the UN will push such tyranny? Yes, their colorful history of supporting tyranny and tyrants is irrefutable!!! Millennium Develoment, L.O.S.T. Human Rights violators in positions of authority on the Human Rights Commission, etc... Can there be any sincere doubt that the UN will push this? Will Obama denounce sucy tryanny? I welcome the surprise! Though, his public support of the Millennium Development goals indicates otherwise. Is consideration of the surrender of our national sovereignty Constitutional? Hmmm, let's see: The basis of our Constitution is our national, state's, and individual sovereignty -- so the answer is unequivocably "NO". How could the effort to abolish our very Constitutional foundation be considered Constitutional? Quite simply IT CAN'T!!! The first U.S. citizens (leaders or not) who seriously support and push the agenda of this argument will absolutely deserve the tag of TRAITOR and any consequences that follow -- no if's, and's, or but's! By the way, the term "57 states" somehow rings a familiar bell. Hmmm, ... ???

Well Obama seems to think that we need better relations with the UN. So not only he is in favor of this but he is looking at several treaties that he wants to ratify. CRC being one that coming up soon for it. Traitor is about the right word for it. The question is.....Are the citiizens of this country going to let him do it?

Yes, their colorful history of supporting tyranny and tyrants is irrefutable" US is a bigger supporter of tyranny and tyrants. Besides UN has not, as I understand it, adopted this resolution., More mindless ranting from the shoot first ask questions later brigade all the best urban

Will we allow it? Well, this is a question that I have publicly skirted. I'm not comfortable discussing the ramifications of the 'sleeping giant' having awakened to recognize that certain individuals have sold us down the river. Suffice it to say, with all seriousness, that if this or any administration undertakes the deliberate demise of our Constitution it will surely be the ugliest time in our nations history -- bar none! Something we should all think long and hard over as we forge forward into the mist of CHANGE.

I'm torn between agreeing with Annie and everyone else. Things have been so crazy lately, odds are...this could really happen. HOW THE HECK it'd be expected to work in countries that're big believers in free speech (like ours) I'm not sure...big problems, perhaps in fighting over this seems like if it actually happens and the U.S. actually agrees to it. I hope the U.N. doesn't accept this. They'd been doing so well lately, cutting down on the crap they pull and doing things that looked pretty good...but I agree, their past history precedes them...they could try to pull this on everyone. It'd be a step back for the middle east, too. I get they're very, very religious there...but they've had bits and pieces of progress, their journalists have ben trying to work against the censorship off and on for years, this would make it impossible for them to move forward...and maybe not just in that one area of freedom. So yeah...this would suck all around. Anyway, to the rest of your questions: Will Obama consider it? Hard to say. Is it constitutional to consider it? NO WAY IN HELL. Like I said...times are crazy enough.

I think the bottom line is it isn't constitutional to even consider it so I really don't think we have to worry too much. I can't imagine something like this having the votes in Congress to be ratified even if President Obama were to support it, which I seriously doubt. We DO have free speech and that should supersede all else in this case. Annie

Annie, 10 years ago no one could have imagined anyone passing a facist and unconstitutional piece of legislation like the patriot act either, but well, there it is. We absolutely must continue to think the unthinkable, imagine the unimaginable and never ever ever take for granted that things will remain as they are or not get worse here. In all likelyhood, no, congress would not give this the supprt it needs to be signed on to, but I am not going to just assume that and take it for granted and neither should any of us. Remember this much, it is us, we the people, who are ultimately charged with guarding our freedoms and protecting the constitution. It is not a responsability I take lightly.

I don't think Obama is dumb enough to support such crap. Even if he were, the entire country would turn on him. We know that legislation like this never protects Christians or other faiths, but is targeted to protect muslims so they can attack us when we print a cartoon like that Danish one that had them attacking embassies. Here's a comical example of how things would be. A friend showed me this so I have to share it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2TmRNYK8dw
