How does YOUR country view foreigners?

How does your country view foreigners? In general, are foreigners welcomed by most people in your region/country, or is there some animosity between regular townspeople and people emigrating from other countries? Or, do people in your country hold grudges against CERTAIN ethnic groups entering the country? I feel like a lot of the people in the United States (where I live) are pretty stuck up when it comes to welcoming immigrants, and I feel like we, as a country, do a lot of stereotyping of people from the middle-east. I feel like after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, we've become a little too paranoid with being friendly & trusting any kind of foreigner, and it's sad. What about where you guys live? What's the general disposition toward foreigners?

I have been umndecided on responding because what I am going to write may be different from what other people perceive, and this discussin may go off-track. Finally I made the decision that I have the same rights on myLot. The influx of immigrants started from the 70's. Initially they were welcomed with open arms by everbody. But now some of us are sceptical with the new immigrants, legal and illegal. I have worked with them and what I know about them are not merely hearsay The problem with them is their attitude towards the country's constitution and local laws and regulations. It cannot be denied that the crime rate increases wherever there is a large community of them. Coincident? I do not think so, when there are too many cases. In certain parts of the country they were allowed to do business. Instead of following the old Malaysian style, where buyers can haggle the price with the peddlers, they hekd on to the attitude of 'take it or leave it'. There is a long list of their ingratitude and intentional wrong doings. Nowadays they are still accepted with open arms but with a little sceptism. all the best, rosdimy

Hi there...I live in Canada and we too are very multi-cultural. The government in fact puts things in place to attract foreigners to our country. I find amongst the common town folk, there is some animosity towards the influx of immagrants also. I think its because there are good and bad immagrants same as the rest of us. However, its the bad ones that stand out and give the good ones a bad name. Very unfortunate really. When they publish that there are terrorists in a certain province, everyone becomes aware, but if its a canadian, its OK...very double standard. Peope are more accepting when they really shouldnt be. The only thing that does bother me, is that most of our call centers have tons of immagrants working on the phones...Some know what their speech is to say but cant carry on a conversation and they are very hard to understand and sometimes I cant at all. I do find this very frustrating. No problem to bring them here if they have a job, but dont fill up our call centers with them if they cant speak english. Afterall most call centers are for information of some sort and you cant get quality info if you cant understand what they are saying. I am not refering to just a bit of an accent either. Some are so bad, I cant make them out at all except for a few words. I find it very frustrating and embarrassing to keep saying.."pardon"

We have many refugee families in our particular area and a very active organization that helps them. It is nice to see so many different people. The only time I get irritated is when people, sometimes men, from some ethnic groups look down on women as if we are beneath them. As if we are lewd for not wearing head gear, etc. Other than that I have no problem talking to anyone. We are all God's children and as such no one is better than another in God's eyes and should not be in ours either.
