Hearing what you are used to...

Most of you have probably seen the joke that's been floating around the internet about how children sort of mis-hear and mis-quote things that they have learned in church. For example, "our father who does art in heaven, Harold be thy name"...
Well people really do mis-hear things and translate them into something that they can understand better. Here are a few personal examples:
Pansys - A childhood memory... When I was about 5, my mom told me to go next door, the neighbors had some pansies for me. Well what does a 5 year old know about pansies? So I trotted on next door puzzled about why the neighbors were going to give me some pants (trousers to you Brits). Was I surprised to find out that it was flowers. I guess children really do translate unfamiliar words into words that they know!
American hearing - Which reminds me of Phyllis... Phyllis was a co-worker at my last company and the boss's administrative assistant. He was in charge of the help desk and she took some of the overflow calls, so she pretty much talked to every area of the company. Phyllis's brain somehow just could not process names that didn't sound English, I guess. So Geeta became Greta, Noor became Nora, etc. The funny thing about this, in an ironic sort of way, was that Phyllis had been born in Greece and English wasn't even her native language.
Dummy - Today as I was cleaning out the pantry, I was watching PBS. They had a lot of really nice concerts on today and in between two of them was a short program on Scotland. It was a visual tour of the Scottish countryside accompanied by music. Cary came in and I said, "look, that's Scotland, isn't it pretty? I have friends there." Cary asked, "what friends?" I said, "computer friends. Jimbo and Pam and Dougie." Cary said, "Dummy? What parent would name their kid Dummy?" So after a big old lol I said, "Dougie, Cary, D o u g i e." See what I said about kids hearing what they're used to?
Have you ever mis-heard anything and turned it into something funny? Stories, please...

Yes i do it alot. Sometimes on purpose, I'll hear some thing and translate to how I thought i heard it. Even though i know what it was i heard in the first place. But then again its the second place. Am i mumbling again?? Must be my sometimers. sheesh.
When i was a little girl I would say the pledge of allegiance and instead of it being indivisible
it was invisible. lol
Ok im done lol

I listened very intently in church because my name rhymed with glory and when the preacher would pound on the pulpit and say "Glory to God in the Highest," I would perk up and look around. I thought I was in trouble and he was talking about me.

I guess that's one way of making your relationship with God more personal!
